Hi, recently in all of my games I encounter split second freezing. It's annoying as crap. The fps will remain solid, but then it will drop about 20 (which will cause a freeze, maybe 1/10th of a second). It's really annoying, I also had this problem a few months ago, I solved it by reformmating..which I really dont want to do. Any advice?

What games does this problem happen in?

Have you tried updating your video card drivers?

Is Vsync on?

What operating system are you using?

You may want to try uninstall/reinstall the games that are giving you the problem.

It sounds like something might be happening in the background.
Do you use Norton Anti Virus?
Make sure the drivers for your board are updated.
Could be another app but probably something along the lines of the swap file.

If you have Windows XP, try right-click My Computer, properties, Advanced tab, Perferomance Settings, Advanced tab, Virtual memory change button.
If you have a harddrive that is pretty free of space put the page file to that drive.
Change make the max size match the initial size (amount of memory x 2.5).
I have 1024mb (1gb) of memory so mine is set to 2560.

Defrag your harddrive recently or is there very much free space?

Ok..I'm using CAT 4.5s, yes vsync is on, it happens in almost all of my games. I have about 20 gigs free on an 80 gig hdd, i'll defrag and do a spyware scan...though i dont have any virus protection, I should probably go and buy norton

I also just did system restore from a checkpoint 20 days ago...hopefull that'll work

Dude you have worms....
the W32.HLLW.Gaobot.gen worm (probably however it could be the other recent one)

ctr-alt-del and check taskmanager, check if you have any process besides "system Idle process" eating your cycles.
(its hard to catch, I had it recently)

ok read through my thread about it here to get a better understanding (or just read my posts I figured it out by)

if you cant be arsed reading it all, read this my post here specifically

and heres a link to an online free scanner (Use IE, and click on the "check for security risks" button *scroll down slightly its in the lower right*)

any more ideas? i need help!...ive done a norton and mcafee virus scan (nothing came up), ive defragged my hdd, updated my drivers, and ive tried another video card and it did the same thing. so it has to be something with software.

I'd like to avoid formatting at all costs because i hate reinstalling everything

you still haven't told us what OS you are running.

but if you have winxp or 98 try START, run, msconfig, go to the startup tab

uncheck ALL

reboot and try a game.

also, its good to be familiar with what processes winxp needs and what processes you don't need, that way you can rule out some process taking away cycles. startup tab of msconfig may not contain all processes that are running on your pc. so check the services tab too, and look for processes that aren't made by microsoft or your video card driver and get rid of them temporarily
