I played through the game at a nice pace, examined some things, eavesdropped on the citizens. (I loved the 'I don't miss Dr. Breen, but I do miss his show. Remember when he had the jugglers on?'.)
Anyway, what exactly happened to Breen? I am sort of confused. Did he die? Did he become mecha-breen? :borg:
And what were those escape pods coming from the citadel?

Those escape pods contained Combine Advisors, or at least one of them did.

I'm fairly certain Breen survived - but it was abit unclear, and I was expecting resolution. They put emphasis on his host body conversation with the Advisor, so that leads me to believe he has possibly fused with the Advisor. Can't be too sure though...

The reactor explosion was big enough to take out the top of the Citadel, but surely he could have escaped?

I hope he escaped, whether he merged with the advisor or not, I'd like to see him to one way or another. Valve said on the Episode One website that his fate would be confirmed, and it seemed like it was kept unclear. I kept expecting to see Breen or see the Combine Advisor talk to me the whole time.

I was kinda dissapointed by that.

At the very beginning alex says she saw breen fall, so I'm guessing he's dead :/

Perhaps they were confirming it with the recording of Breen? Thats what I think anyway!

Hmm. Was that supposed to be the confirmation that he died or something? :|

By falling she meant his orb dropping after you kill the reactor.

They've said the words "host body" in two episodes now. Breen's a slug.

Maybe he was "in" or "connected" with that thing that goes under you then does that mind control thing.

We can only hope. Breen is a great villain. An oustanding villain. If he sticks around in the Half-Life universe then he risks getting cliched, and Half-Life is suffering from that enough as it is. I'd rather remember Breen's great speeches as something gone-by that won't be back. Villains who die and come back are lame.

Half-life hasn't got a jot of cliche or generic in it. It's probably the only original thing out there.

You know I think Breen and the Combine Advisor both escaped in that escape pod. One the of Combine stays on Earth to act as a foreman and Breen is just a secretary or something. We won't be seeing the last of him I hope.

It could make for some interesting situations if he is still alive, however i'm personally not too sure if he still is or not.

Were any of you even playing the game?

SPOILERS:

When the breen's host body goes underneath you and Alyx you can hear breen laughing in your head while Alyx and you try to escape it. Fairly obvious that he was being "shuttled" to the escape pods you see in the end of the game.

Never heard that, was paying more to what was happening then the sound at the time, and it's quite obvious we were playing it ;)

Are you sure about the laughing? I didn't here anything. And I ask a question though, if Breen never left Earth, why did he put himself into the body of a fat slug? :D

And another question, why were there so many Combine Advisors in the Citadel? And how come they released the escape pods right as the Citadel exploded?

I didn't hear any laughing either..Played through some of it this morning, with commentary on..

Well that entire 'day' escape pods were being sent off one by one, so I guess when the Citadel was exploding, they just sent the whole fleet off...

All I heard was the mind blast, then the whoosh of the citadel and City 17 exploding.

I may have heard some mumbling..But it wasn't even words, like Nihilanth..No where audible like his...

So the question now is, were YOU even playing the game Mr.Northwood :O

One thing I wouldn't get.. City 17 is unretrievable.. Breen failed.. Why would the Combine Advisor even want to bother with Breen..

Alyx is very much cliche and is clearly there only to hook more impressionable gamers. Fact.

Overriding their own ending is an oft used strategy and the Vorts aren't exactly original in the way they intervene.

It's the beggining and it can only get worse.

Granted, they used her very well in Episode One. The growl she makes in the darkness at one point as a prank was clever.

I completely disagree. Oh no, she's female! Cliche!
You can't just clamp cliche onto everything that doesn't look as though it's out of sci-fi refreshments.

Tip :: It's best not to argue with Samon on these things, we've all tried and failed :(
