Im kinda confused.....H-L2 has flashlight energy (like H-L 1 ) but, apparently hl2 also has sprint energy. Does that mean you can only run so long, and then have to walk til it rebuilds (like doom 3). I kinda hope not, always thought it was kinda annoying, but could someone clearify this for me?

sprinting is either just like doom3, or like dod where your gun is down.

Its known as Auxiliary power. The bar goes down the more you use, it recharges like the flashlight.

BETA!!!111

Yes, there's only a limited amount of time that you can sprint. Personally, I like the idea; I think it adds to the realism.

You normally can run like in HL1, but now you can also take a short sprint.

Its better that way, you can run forever in real life so it makes the game more realistic

ahh, so you can "jog" like in H-L, but take short sprints. I get it, I was worried for a sec ; )

Ok, seems im the first person who really knows what they're talking about, i really can't remember where i got this from but its no leak so don't start b****ing.

Your "AUXILIARY POWER" is your flashlight AND sprint.
At a guess you can use flashlight for same amount of time as hl1 (about the length of hl1 before it runs out lol) and sprinting makes it go down quicker (sprint for at a guess 5 seconds).

So no sprinting when you need the light OK?

Do you mean realistic in the sense that everyone gets their energy from an auxiliary power source from within their HEV suit, or that you cant sprint forever? :p

personally i find it annoying, this was stated to be a con in the PCGamer review too :|

Check it:

Bipedal motion in Half-Life 2:
1. Walk (toggle, unlimited)
2. Jog (default on, unlimited)
3. Sprint (toggle, limited)

Get it? It's an improvement to gameplay. And if it's annoying to a large number of people to use the same power source for both the flashlight and the sprint, there are these really neat things called patches that magically change games!

It means you cant sprint in dark areas where you need the flashlight which could come up with some pretty spooky moments :)

Makes sense if Gordy's HEV is actually powered armour, which seems likely to me. Sprinting feeds power to artificial muscle material in the legs, which increases speed but drains the auxiliary power supply.

I just hope that the power is drained faster than it is rechareged (if it is). In HL the flashlight would recharge faster than it would uncharge, a perpetual motion machine ;)

I have been warned about running with scissors, but never have I been warned about running with a flashlight.

This is in HL2?

Killer!

I thought this was one of the best additions to Doom3.

Its pretty lame to be constantly running at full speed in a game with so much atmosphere and interaction..

dont be sarcastic, forest gump did it

Basically you slow to a crawl when the energy runs out, but when you use it you go really fast. Fairly annoying in open areas.

i like the idea, but i hope they do it well, doom3 had a sprint feature you could use but you had waaaay too much energy for it. You could sprint for like 5 MINUTES with that thing. I hope they do something where you can sprint at a fast speed for like 8 seconds then it will run out, then you will jog really slow for a few seconds while it recharges. Then when it is done recharging you can jog at normal speed or sprint again.

IN HL your wearing a HEV suit which provided you with a built in flashlight medical systems and armor systems. In HL2 im gussing it provides all those systems AND a increased speed system think of it like a motorcar for your legs you can still run but when you need to you can run faster :)

I don't know what everyone's upset about. From the sound of it...your run normally...but when you are running from cover to cover or escaping a grenade or something...you can go faster. You can't go faster as much as you want...that'd just defeat the whole purpose of having sprint.

Some people may be disappointed in how slow you are without sprinting. Look at any binks: that's top speed without a boost...most of the time they're not going slow on purpose ,that's how fast you really go.

This sounds excellent to me.
Do you really want to be running at full steam in heavily crowed places with lots of player interaction? Bumping into objects, flying past people who may be escorting you, and moving in a wholly unnatural manner?

Screw that! It makes me think of Quake 3 Arena and its hyperspeed gameplay. What a joke.

REALISM, PEOPLE!!#!#%!

Its a good thing.

i hope walking speed is EXACTLY the same as the NPC's walking speed, so you can make out you're walking as you would in real life.

Because in hl1, if you walked you were still faster than them :(

What? A young man walking faster than a bunch of bumbling, white coated 40-pluses?

Unthinkable!

I wonder if you can use the sprint function together with jumping...

The Matrix comes to mind...

sprints are short bursts of speed. Donovan Bailey, Gordan is not, so I'm glad that they added this feature. Unless you're running downhill, no one can sprint forever, and even then, they can't go on indefinately. Jogging is believable, sprinting is not.

Besides, it could be worse. You're speed could go down gradually as the bar decreases.

yay, 200th post! :bounce:

Well, there is a moment in one of the E3 2004 strider videos where Gordon hits sprint for a second, and the jumps over a railing and lands on a health pack.

Nothing too crazy, but the physical simulation of everything does mean that faster running should make the jumps go further.

watch the videos. when he meets father gregori, he sprints in short bursts. thats why the gun keeps pointing down and then up (the part where you walk through the graveyard and the zombies drop down).

sprinting has been put into the latest games, and im sure hl2 has it (also sprints on the bugbait video where he shoots out the windows with the OICW).
