For those of you awaiting STALKER, I've just found this new image at one of my favorite sites. At first I thought it was your standard cover art, then I realized it's an up to date in-game pic! No, I have not given up on HL2; I just find STALKER to be quite intruiging and beautiful.

Enjoy!

and some people say normal maps aren't important pfsfst. I'll show them that pic in future to prove their wrong

cheers

/me dies :D

That's really really cool :E

Still loving Far Cry the most though :cheese:

Far cry is a bit cartoony imho. Stalker all the way! :D
I think both though have the potential to beat hl2.

:afro:

EDIT: check out the new demo vid at www.stalker-game.com

Yeah This is an old image, but still kik ass, its next months issue replay:

I think replay is a german mag, isn't it?
:imu:

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooww.... That's amazing! The inner thigh and gloves could use a little work but man,...that's the best I've seen!

hey you wanna leave that page open and nod off from being so tired.. leave the sound turned up and I swear the audio gave me the weirdest dream I've had in some time.. damn that was seriously messed up lol

Thats russian I think.

I don't get what are you so happy about? It's not an in-game render, it's just photoshoped drowing.

Strange, it's Ukrainian gaming magazine which is piblished in Ukraine, but written in russian.

Hm... I always go screaming "make it dirtier! make it used!" etc about nearly every model I see, but this I would say is overdoing it :p

But everyone just praise those darn stalker, deus ex 2, pff... How about the smaller games? HoTU is gold! :) (overshadowed by KOTOR though)

WTFUXORZ??? this is a HALF-LIFE2 site you bastards! HL2 FOREVA BABY!!!!! STLAKER SUX0RZ MY BALLZ0RZ!!! RARRGH!! MURDER!!!!

ahh, that felt nice.

Damn, I heard the GSC team was planning on implementing character normal mapping, but I wasn't prepared for that level of detail. The lower half of his suit and his holsters look like they're slowing being eaten away by radiation.

I think S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has the potential to be one of the best games of the year, even going up against the likes of HL2, D3, and FC. But, then again, it also has the potential to be a total flop considering it's being made by an unestablished developer and being backed by nVidia.

wasn't Valve unestablished when they made Half-Life originally? They did pretty well for themselves afterwards I'd say

I'm saying it's harder to know what level of quality to expect from an unestablished developer than it is from a developer we all know and trust, such as Valve or id. Especially when that unknown company is taking on the huge task of creating their own engine.

Yes, they were.

No, it is an in-game shot. You obviously can't discern the polygons.
Or even visual content, for that matter.

No, that's why I'm saying that STALKER has the potential to flop. I do however trust trends. I feel like once a developer puts out a good game, they're more likely to put out another good game than one who hasn't released anything yet.

Hl2 has the potential to flop, so does Halo 2. Both games I look forward to, and feel optimistic about their impact. But that doesn't change that they have the potential to flop. If you trust in trends, it's likely you'll be disappointed at some point in time.

It may well be an in-game shot of the character model, GSC has been talking about normal mapping the character models for a while now. They've also started adding HDR and incredible diffused reflections of lights off things like tile. Most of the screenshots out now are older and don't have much pixel shading. I think they just recently began the process of touching up the visuals.

I never said HL2 or D3 didn't have the potential to flop, I just feel they have a better chance of being great games than a game from an unknown developer. Do you see my reasoning here?

Samara was creepier than Sadako after she came out of the TV, but Sadako wins when she was headed out of the well.. she did that whole laggy-walking thing, which was cool looking

Sadako wins hands down for sheer creepyness, while the films don't out right scare me anymore, the concept of sadako scares the sh*t out of me, I mean, imagine looking behind you late at night and seeing her looking around the door straight at you *shudder* lol.

The climbing out of the well, the climbing through the TV and in Ring2 I'd have to say the scene when the now dead girls friend comes downstairs and Sadako looks out from the living room and turns her head to face her, gotta admit thats probably the best bit from the second film, that and the scared girl on the second tape when her head starts shaking too much. Sadako's movement is very creepy though I gotta agree.

Keep meaning to buy these on DVD for x-mas, keep forgetting. Hoping I can get all four (ring, ring2, ring 0 and the ring) I know the first three are in a collection, just finding a store that stocks them.

I'm not a fan really of The Ring, its based too much on both Ring and Ring2 and I think the Ring2 elements spoil the film, even though Ring2 isn't that bad a film, it explains too much that distracts from the first. I feel sorry for those who saw the US version before the original as it spoilt it for them. Mind you I guess I was lucky, I had no idea what Ring was, didn't have a clue, watched it cause I was curious, didn't expect a thing, full effect of being scared witless, excellent :D

these are just silly http://adenomates.**********/ try the towelhead one, thats just daft :D

hhmmm is that really an ingame render, it looks like an ingame model that has been render in some 3D software and has been composed over the top of an ingame background.

it will have deffinately been composited. But I think it could quite be an actual model. Maybe a little photoshop touch up here and there but its certainly an in game model, its low poly, can see the area's where it could have used more polygons. I've had a closer look in photoshop and I do think it was a straight screengrab from the engine. There's no realtime shadows in it, they looked like their baked into the texture (under the arms and so on) to help with the effect of realism... Second thoughts, there might be one realtime light on there, the shadow beneath the tubing and the hood shadow may have been realtime, with the light directly above. Or that could have been baked also, though their noticable shadows, so would work better as realtime than baked. hmm ok what was the point of this, oh yeah, its a slightly photoshopped screenshot from the game composited over the background

Even I have to admit Stalker is shaping up to look nice. So.. their engine does day/night cycles too huh?... *edges a little closer to stalker and buys it a drink*

So anyone still wanna tell me normal maps aren't important? hmm? ;)

I watched that day/night cycle video, non of the building shadows seemed to move but it said it was pre alpha so I won't pass judgment yet.

I think the shadows are real-time, and I think this is a direct engine grab.
A lot of people thought the most recent Halo 2 shots of the Elites was photoshopped...they were wrong. I watched the video that the shot had been taken from; Everything looked to be in place.

Quite impressive for a pre-alpha build, wouldn't you say? :)

It works and at an acceptable speed by the looks of it, which is good for any software in the pre-alpha stage.

Yeah yeah, I agree, Sadako is creepier overall, but I think it was better executed in the American film when she came out of the TV.

Anyhow, I completely agree with the living-room-peering scene in The Ring 2, that was the best part about it. And, the dubbing part (head shaking) was also really good. Although, the part where they ended up in the well and Sadako climbed the wall, it was cool, but, a little bit weird as to why they ended up in the well.

I saw the American film before the Japanese one, but I went and saw it and had no idea what it was about, and, not sure if you saw it on the big screen, but it was much more dramatic than watching it on DVD. I can't find Ringu/Ring 2/Ring 0 anywhere here in the states, so I ended up downloading them and burning them to SVCD, lol

Anyhow, back on topic, that's a really well done normal mapped model, looks really good. :)

Edit: Also, another good scene was when they were in that hotel on the island, and Sadako's mother appeared, then Sadako walked up, and the mirror started twitching left and right.. interesting, but what makes that scene is when Sadako's mother glides out of sight, then half-peers around the corner, creepy :)

I can't wait for the release. Then we get to really see what this game is made of!

Has anyone else noticed that before all the news sites and mags said that this year was one of the best for gaming in absolutly ages.

Well with all these delays, won't next year be like the biggest year of gaming EVER!!

I thought I was haveing trouble with AS levels. My A levels are gona be fecked up beyond all recognition!!!!!!!!!

Also Ghost, I cant wait for any of these big games. I really want to put my new comp to good use and challenge it a little! lol

Counterstrike plus gaming plus learning to become a 3D artist in spare time plus reading up on engines = really bad AS level grades, im doing A level now retaking a few untis and if HL2, Doom3, or Farcry come out before jan 22nd, im a dead man :(
Oh yea and deux ex 2 is gonna occupy me for yonks, not a good year for work is it?
Anyway when is the demo expected to be released?

I think that Stalker will be make or break on the storyline and how well it translates internationally. The fact that these guys have been at it since before HL2 was even announced indicates to me that they have some serious funding going on behind the scenes. Maybe Roman Abramovich is a keen gamer in his spare time:upstare:

Total Annihilation 2 is comeing out next year as well, if it's as good as the first I won't have to stay stuck in the fps genre anymore. It takes a really good RTS to keep my attention and all the current ones just arn't good enough .

Next year is the most impressive FPS line-up I have ever seen.

STALKER
Halo 2
Half-Life 2
DooMIII
Pain Killer
And apparently Far Cry. (I have to mention it or someone will get in my face.) :)
