S.T.A.L.K.E.R. finished - briefly
(hx) 06:41 PM EST - Jan,07 2006 - Post a comment / read (6)
Several sites have written that S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl has gone gold, referencing the recent news by stalker-world.com.ua:
We got some information that GSC had recently finished its work on Stalker. The final build has the whole storyline, 20 levels and all of the features. With other words final version. The only thing missing are the videos, they will be made by THQ with the balancing of the game. Along with it we expect the PR campaign to begin. This means that everything is in THQ hands and S.T.A.L.K.E.R should be released in 6-8 months.
What the site tried to say, is that the game has reached beta stage. The release is still scheduled for "When It's Done", and as THQ has previously stated, this will not occur before Fall 2006. (thanks Oblivion-Lost.com)

It just might make it out before duke nukem forever.

As much as I want this game I will believe it when I have a copy of it in my hands!

1. How can it have "gone gold" but still be in beta stage
2. "The final build has the whole storyline, 20 levels and all of the features." I thought STALKER was one big freeform level around Chernobyl.

20 levels eh? if there's no seamless huge world what's the use of having AI that sleeps and eats and migrates etc? sounds to me like they gave up on the AI and the seamless world just to ship it out sometime this decade. The game will have little in common with what they announced back 3-4 years ago, now it's just like every other fps out there. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I'm not holding my breath

Should be an awesome game.
edit: They don't mean it as 20 levels strung together but as one huge world split into 20 sections or "levels." Give them a break, this was made before the pre-"seamless world" tech era.

I told you stern...... its gonna suck^^

They could keep their promises.. so made it in2 a ordinary FPS.

yeah...seemed like they were working on something the fps genre needs but i suppose 2 years of delays does weigh on people.
its too bad...but i suppose we'll see when the game is finally available.

20 levels... :|

Seamless world my ass.

"20 levels" Well thats video games journalism for you.

Will be picking this up for sure. Hope they didnt cut any of the ideas.

Guys you do realize that even in a streamless world there are seperate levels right?

I mean it's not like all the mappers worked on the same map at once... They probably pieced different levels together to form one large seamless world...

From a recent interview with the devs..

11) 30 squared km. - how much is it (length, width)?

The zone is stretched rectangle. Level size is about – 2 square km. There will be 18 levels and this gives 30 squared km. or something close to it.

And from the exact same interview (different part)

2. How are you going to make inaccessible locations to newbie, without making any walls or invisible barriers?

The whole zone will be opened for you. But if you are a newbie you will face a lot of obstacles, like military outposts or anomalies. But if you are lucky, you can break through. We give you full freedom in game..

So nothing has been cut! :p

*edit*

Change the 5 to something betweeen 1-5 to see the whole 5 part interview.

Almost made me do another dance like when I read about the fake Starcraft 2coming out soon. 6-8 months is a long long time.

OMG! *dances*

Heh, you still won't have the game for 6-8 months :p

I mean all this is really, is just an announcement that they've gone Beta... A large majority of GSC's work is over, because all they need to do now is balance values, optimize, and just clean up all the code they've already written... So they aren't writing a whole lot of new code...

It's NOT gold!

This ought to be cool. I don't have super-high expectations for it, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised :D

Maybe it means 20 segments of the same stage? Or maybe it means 20 missions?

I'm still very skeptical about the quality of this game. After all the delays, I wonder if it's like what was envisioned a few years ago.

Fingers crossed.

That 20 level thing is extremely old news. It was on their site for over two years. The Zone was to be split up into multiple levels 5km by 5km and smaller.

Right now, it says:

Q: How big will the outdoor arenas be?
A: Certain levels will attain up to five square kilometres in size.

Q: How big is the game world?
A: The Zone territory is approximately 30 sq. km

...

Q: How big will the open levels and the whole game world be?
A: Some of the 18 game levels will be really huge, more than two kilometers in a diameter, and the other just a tad smaller.
The whole game territory covers more than 30 square kilometers in the form of an elongated rectangle split into 18 parts, with the passage from one to another unconstrained.

On loading:

Q: How will level changing work?
A: Locations, i.e. levels, are connected with the passages. When moving through such a passage another level loads automatically.

Q: How will level changing work?
A: By a quick load upon passing the level boundary.

Is that supposed to be funny?

Give some respect to those who developed the game, even if you plan on getting it illegally I would suggest you keep it yourself.

Il buy it no matter what. From when i first saw the game i knew i had to have it. I hope it will be as good as i think it'll be. :)

Its good news, if its true. Its not becoming a DNF.

But even then, gone gold, and we still have to wait 6-8 months??

Oooh, cool.. i'm not too excited, since it's long time away... atleast I know it's coming though. I should start saving a little bit toward new PC!

Must not...... Kill..... Need.. My mutha fuzzuckin S.T.A.L.K.E.R..... *Eyes* Everyone* Checked it out, but it kinda sucks that they don't have more enemies than shown on the site.... Or could there be more.....?

/me wants to AK a big lizard mutant human rat dog crack whore creature.... Thing.

Sadly guys, this is false news, wilka, I know that several newssite posted it, so I'm not blaming you.

I'll quote STALKERs biggest fansite, www.oblivion-lost.com

It's too bad to see you all get your hopes up so much.:D

Oh well!

I'm glad I knew this 2 days ago.:p

Ya thats what i thought. It said it went gold but then it says 6 months of beta testing. Going Gold means 2-3 weeks and its on the shelf. Still good news. Beta = good news.

Indeed, seeing as now everything that's supposed to be in the game is in the game, all they need to do is finishing it up and wrapping it together(Read, checking through for bugs etc), so atleast now I have no doubt whatsoever we'll see it this year, too bad that THQ or whoever's publishing it don't wanna publish it during summer, seeing as it's a period of low sales for games.
Which means we might have to wait a month or maybe even two after the game goes gold if it's still summer!*Mutters*

If this game fails, that company's going out of business.

this is GOOOOOOD news :naughty: . time to save up some cash for a new computer!

boglito, indeed, but the thing is, in the original language, they didn't even say gold in the interview, they must've translated it incorrectly, because they stated it had gone into beta, not gold..

Damn these news sites!

Oh well, it's nice to know that it's entered beta atleast, and thus is only going through the bugfixing stage now.

elder scrolls?

Heh, Morrowind : A Seemless world filled with no content.

I'm still dubious about whether this game will be any good or not.

I second that

1. The devs DID NOT SAY it had gone gold, it was the translators that mistranslated it as such, so if you wanna pick on someone, pick on the people who translated the article, or why not even the journalists who wrote the news? I'd really prefer it if they had themselves checked the original Russian article(I.e. not translated to English) to see if it actually said gold.
2. STALKER has never been confirmed to have seamless levels, it has a large part of Chernobyl made totally of the real area, and an area that has been "designed" for the game, tbh, I'm happy as it is now, with not seamless, seeing as for example if we had seamless, we'd probably have far less detailed levels.
