Well essentially..
For those that missed the deal on steam, sign up at gametap.com and the first month is only a buck. Ive always known about their free games and what not but I didnt realize until looking at the recent steam sales, how much gametap kicks steam's ass. The yearly rate is only 60 bucks..thats the price of one game nowadays. Tons of great older games on here as well:

Prince of Persia trilogy
Splinter Cell 1,2,3
Hitman series
Civilization 3 & 4
Tomb Raider series
Empire Earth
Commandos
Myst series
Sam and Max episodes
Rainbow Six series
Planescape Torment
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Serious Sam series
Red Faction 2
Dues Ex 1 & 2
Farcry
Baldurs gate 1 & 2
Icewind dale 1& 2
Old sonic genesis games
Colin Mcrae Racing '05
Psychonauts
EDIT: silent hill 2 and 3

All of this for 60 a year? Are you ****in kidding me? Plus hundreds of others I didnt mention. Steam has nothing on gametap. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

No, I suggest you check out Steam's holiday sales aswell...

Sure there are some brand new games on steam for cheap, bioshock for example..but show me one deal on steam that is as valuable as this.

Thats what I thought. Good day sir.

I prefer to own the games permenently, not simply rent them, though I can see how this would be a good deal if you couldnt afford to buy them, ive never had a problem with paying for stuff i like though.

Technically you do own them, its not like they are taken away from you after a period of time. So therefore it is not a rent. Sure if you dont pay the fee then you dont get access, but as long as you dont delete the save files you can always sign back up when you like.
For me most of these games I wouldnt buy, even if I had a demo, so it gives me the chance to play all sorts of games that I dont want to throw 10-20 bucks on and end up hating it.

Steam > Gametap

Mostly because of the communications network.

Sure the deals are good, but I hate paying "membership fees"

Think my beta account is still open...wonder if I'll have to pay

I trialed gametap. Best game was The Oregon Trail, and the rest of it was buggy as hell.
I would not go back.

I resent that oregon trail is worth the purchase alone. Ive come across bugs here and there but nothing big, did you try it during the beta or somethin?
And yes Dalamari you will.

It just made my computer run like crap, and the interface just sucks.

Gametap is an giant encrypted pile of crap. Subscription based services are a waste of time as soon as you stop paying that yearly fee and that year runs out all those gbs of downloaded files are worthless. It takes ages for gametap to get new games anyway so why bother? The collection of classics is nice but I really don't see too many people bothering with games they've probably already played and finished years ago.

Never mind if you're someone like me and live in another country so download speeds off gametap servers are slow as shit. Compared to steam where I connect to my ISPs content mirror and everything is just peachy.

Actually, that's exactly what it's like. Just because you keep the files doesn't mean anything as they're encrypted anyway. Enjoy your wasted hard drive space.

Gametap is nice for free games (Deus Ex for example) but that's about it. For classic games just use www.gog.com, can't go past it for awesome deals.

.
This..and:

I really don't see too many people bothering with games they've probably already played and finished years ago.
?? Is this not the samething? I know right now I'm playing games I've wanted to play for years for a buck, and when I'm done 9/10 of them I wont bother picking up again.

Bad^hat,
Even if you look at it as a rental I'd still argue its way better than you guys are giving it credit for. Sure gog.com is a cool place, but I'd much rather atleast try everything out then throw more money down on something that I have no clue will be any good at all. THAT is why I no longer buy new games the day they come out...etc.

You know what that sounds a lot like?

Renting.

Eh I really put zero thought into that post. I was criticising their time frame to get new titles on their network. There's probably a nice even split towards those who want new titles and those that want old ones. Just the same I've used Gametap a total of one time to get access to Uru Live. I could sign up again but I can't stand the idea of wasting my download cap (having very little) on something that'll be useless the next month. The yearly plan is nice but the Gametap software really puts me off ever touching it again.

Oh and they don't have Homeworld Cataclysm and that just makes me sad.

Stop yelling, krynn. OK fine its renting, FINE. But..its cheap. 60 bucks a year for a shitload of games that dont have a return date of a freakin week, how many games do you buy for 30-50 bucks play for 8-12 hours and set it aside never to pick up again, other than to sell them(like me)?

EDIT: kyorishu,
Yes your right they dont take awhile to get new games, but if you've been behind on game releases to begin with (me) then it doesnt really matter.

Too many... *sigh*

Too many.

How does multiplayer work in these games? Can you play with retail versions?

EDIT: Also, I have pretty much every one of those games already, so gametap still doesnt interest me much. Maybe if they got new releases, but otherwise, im usually too impatient to wait for the good deals.

I've wanted to look into that. When game devs put their games onto gametap surely they must hand over a special kind of timebomb serial. Otherwise there's nothing to stop a random signing up for a $1 downloading a bunch of games, ripping the keys out of windows registry and using pirated copies to play essentially for free.

Apparently Bloodrayne is free now. /downloads client thingy.

Its been awhile since I've played anything online, but if you have a controller just download the free version and check out street fighter 2 for your answer. From what I remember its alot like the lobby system in say diablo/starcraft if the game doesnt already have a browser built into it. And yes you can play with retail versions, and actually you can buy the full versions of about half of the games listed for gold status. Sam and max season 1 ep. 1-3 is 20 bucks..anyone know if that is the official retail price its going for right now?

EDIT: Kyroishu, you've just given me a great idea.

Also krynn, you might wanna look into some of the classic games that have online features now. Such as SF alpha 3. And yes you are very impatient, but so am I..I guess poverty is a virtue :p.

I know where you can get games for free, really fast, usually before release date, several weeks in fact if it's for a console, and you can keep them for as long as you want, oh and you don't have to deal with DRM.

DRM irks me in so many ways. I know with a subscription based system its a fundamental component for the damn thing to work but just the same I don't like it.

/edit man this thing is slow. Come on steam will give me 830 down in a few seconds.

Gogo slow download, go.

Yeah, Gametap kicks it's ass so bad....you have to pay to play the games! Man, I wish I would have seen the light before downloading steam!

Either my sarcasm isn't on it's game today, or your meter is broken. Please advise to which one, so I can rectify the issue.

I'm currently downloading something at 1.5 kb per second, yay.

Sam & Max ep 1-3 is only $18 on Steam right now.
Retail is $20.

You take that back. The first is awesome, Bloodrayne 2 sucks.

Meanwhile steam speeds whilst people are heavily torrenting. No torrents running and that max speed would easily double.

r u jokin me

Steam downloads games for me at 2.1 mb/s

MEGABYTES

I'm stuck on DSL1 mate. This is the fastest she will go. If I had DSL2 and considering how close to the exchange yes I could pull up to 2.4mb/s
