slightly disappointing news:

cpcat:
Well, another question - how soon will you publish new outdoor DX9 screens?

{GSC}Anton:
We are preparing an advertising campaign, which will begin about half a year before the game's release

so 6 months minimum from now if the ads were released today which they havent. I'm guessing the ads will debut around e3 which would put the release date around november ...that's being optomistic ...it may not even be released this year. I've really wanted this game from the start but it may be too long of a wait I may lose interest completely

A holiday release might be good for the game. Although it would be going up against whatever big-name titles are coming out near Christmas time, I'm still going to buy it, just because it has such a cool concept, and great potential.

Yeah.... Im loosing intrest aswell..

By the time Stalker is released, we would have surpassed its graphics......?

Dunno, the only game (or engine) that we've seen has better graphics than STALKER is UE3 which won't be out till 2006 so i doubt the graphics will be bad when it does come out.

Hmm, I think FEAR may very well outdo STALKER. Damn, what's with all the acronyms thesedays?

So what if the graphics are surpassed? They're still good graphics. Besides, seems to me that this game is more about gameplay than anything else.

Im getting it whenever it comes out. So many games on my to get list... :O

It seems to me that they're totally different types of games.

I'm glad they're taking the time necessary to get it right.

I was talking in terms of graphics, not gameplay.

Half-Life 2 has better graphics than STALKER in some areas, definitely better models and animation as well as textures in places. STALKER probably pips it in lighting & world geometry though as well as higher definition textures.

I think GSC are definitely pushing it if they don't release it until the fall of this year or worse next year, their technology is already starting to look a bit dated, and graphics sell games.

I think there'll be two different opinions on what has the best graphics between FEAR and STALKER. Just like the difference in opinions between HL2 and Doom3 graphics. STALKER look's like the next-gen in HL2 style graphics and FEAR looks like the next-gen in Doom3 style graphics.

True, but FEAR's only artificial looking stuff at the moment is its models; the maps look gorgous and authentic.

Dont forget that the next outflow of publicity will include shots of dx9 level graphics.
Nearly all of stalkers previous sreens have been dx8, and are showing their age somewhat.
The few vids and screens that are dx9 (all inside atm), show a graphics engine that are at the same level as doom3 in terms of light and shadow.
The outdoor dx9 screens will make a lot of people revise their opinions of the game in a flash.

Still, its a shame that we have at least six months to go though.

Late 2005 ?

The_Ghost just drawed my attention to a report about a possible release date of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. over at Game Rankings, so I will just quote.

"THQ Inc., today confirms that their highly anticipated survival first-person shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl for PC will ship in Fiscal Q4 - 2005.

"S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl represents an important new original intellectual property for THQ and we have moved the game to our fiscal fourth quarter, which we view as an optimal window to establish a new IP," said Darren Williams, Global Brand Manager, THQ

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl boasts some of the most advanced technology and graphics ever delivered on a PC, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl brings the foreboding post-nuclear disaster zone to life in the year 2012. As a mercenary, the player will venture into the exclusion zone in order to acquire information, technology and artefacts to sell on the black market, but he isn't alone. Developed by GSC Gameworld in Kiev and powered by its highly acclaimed and proprietary X-Ray engine, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is well positioned to re-define FPS gaming."

It is still unclear which real quarter this corresponds to, so we have asked for a confirmation from THQ, stay tuned.

Update: As THQ confirmed to us, this piece of news is wrong. The current release date is still "when it's done".
