Tonight Paramount pulled off one of the coolest stunts in fan history. Promoted as just a 10 minute preview of the new Star Trek to show along with The Wrath of Khan, tonight fans in Austin, TX were actually shown the entire new Star Trek movie. The event included surprise guests, including the original Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

According to our man on the scene, the evening started off normally at the Fantastic Fest Star Trek event at the Alamo Draughthouse Theater in Austin, Texas on Monday night. Star Trek filmmakers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof kicked things off by telling the crowd of around 200, that they would be seeing the Star Trek preview after Wrath of Khan. Two minutes in to the showing of TWOK, the film appeared to have â??meltedâ?? and the guys came back out on the stage and appeared to be stalling for time while the film was fixedâ?¦and then, wearing a ball cap, Leonard Nimoy came out in front of the audience holding a film can.

Nimoy noted to the crowd that it just didnâ??t seem fair that people in Australia were the fist to see the film and asked them "wouldnâ??t you rather see the new movie?" And apparently the crowd went wild.

reviews by those that attended the surprise screeing were overwelmingly positive

According to a friend who called in to TrekMovie after the event, the audience reaction was very positive. There were "genuine laughs" at the jokes and "quiet moments" with the serious character stuff. And apparently the crowd applauded at the introduction to each character. The film ended with a standing ovation.

preaching to the choir but they can also be it's toughest audience .... I may have to see this in the theater

That's why I HATE going to first showings of movies. That shit pisses me off.

well to be fair it was star trek fans who've just been surprised by a screening of the unreleased movie. I'm surprised they didnt hum along to the opening credits while holding up their hands in spock like peace fashion

Star Trek not really suppoeed to be "LOL" funny imho...

Positive reviews from "normal" people. Sounds good. I'll be seeing it anyway, though.

At least there was no disgruntled fans muttering about non-canon mentioned.

Can't ****ing wait.
This is definitely my most anticipated movie of the year.

Haha, then you must have hated Lord of the Rings.

I'm watching all the older movies to catch up on stuff. so far i just finished I-IV and I saw a lot of the newer ones. these movies are great!

My sister saw this a day or two ago, she thought it was very good.

I have never heard of people doing this crap outside of people talking about it on the internet. Is this an American thing like applauding whenever an aeroplane that you're on lands?

Just something I've heard of (and heard) Americans doing.

I've been on a bunch of flights and no one has ever applauded when we landed.

I've been on a flight that did so (Southwest Airlines). But there's a point to that, the crew did a good job, it was entertaining/pleasant etc. I don't see why one would applaud in a movie theater, all they do was play the film and usher with their red glowy stick things.

Fair enough. I was told before that Americans do it but I never really believed it. I've heard people doing it since though, twice. I guess some Americans do it.

I've only flown Southwest (20ish times) and I've never seen that.

Also this Star Trek hype has gotten me into watching The Next Generation from start to finish (which I haven't done since it was on the air when I was very young). I'm almost done Season 4. And then maybe Voyager.

Yeah. I said it. TNG > TOS.

I can't not think "Sylar", I can't not think "Shaun", and I keep wishing George Takai was in it.

They're advertising the shit out of this on TV, holy ****.
I watched 5 different channels yesterday and saw all 3 of those TV spots, atleast 4 times each.
