Perpetual Entertainment to beam up Star Trek MMORPG

San Francisco developer/publisher lands coveted Paramount sci-fi license, $6.5 million in funding on same day.

Although it is less than two years old, Perpetual Entertainment has acquired one of the most coveted sci-fi licenses on the market. The San Francisco-based company announced today that it has secured the license for a massively multiplayer online game based on Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek franchise. Simultaneously, Perpetual announced it had secured $6.5 million in additional financing, no doubt connected to the deal.

Under the agreement, Perpetual Entertainment will develop and publish the Star Trek MMORPG internationally, with a public beta testing tentatively scheduled for 2006 and a launch for early 2007. No platforms were mentioned and neither was a name for the game, which is going by the working title, Star Trek Online.

However, even though the license covers all Star Trek motion pictures and television series, from the original series to the prequel Star Trek: Enterprise, the MMORPG will be set during the 24th-century timeline of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager. Perpetual said that other Star Trek universe timelines would be added through expansion packs later on.

As far as Star Trek Online's gameplay is concerned, a lengthy FAQ outlines many details on the game. It will follow a person, not a ship, although Perpetual has not decided whether or not it will be from a third- or first-person perspective. Star Trek Online will let players encounter the Enterprise and meet personalities from the Star Trek series. However, players will create their own characters from several undisclosed races. The FAQ does make mention of "enemies" from the Star Trek series, but it did not say whether or not gamers could play as Federation foes such as the Cardassians, Romulans, or--in some cases--the Klingons.

Players will be able to explore space in "dozens of ship types," and they will be able to duke it out with phasers and photon torpedoes. The game will also allow players to disembark from their starship onto planetary surfaces, with Perpetual promising that "ground combat will be fast paced and unique to the [MMORPG] genre."

I hope they don't **** up.

A nerd sheds a tear, too bad they charge a monthly fee. They should give the games out for free (ie: just download them), and then pay on a monthly basis, that I could live with. But pay for the game and then monthly fees, thanks but no thanks, I'll stick to my superb HL2 multiplayer ;)

You just know its gonna be ****ed up. It reads like a source mod.

And ofcourse the usual Picard, Picard1, Piccard

Everyone wanting to be on the enterprise

Everyone simply copying the episodes

Think about it.. trekkies.. SWG was bad enough, this will just be scary :p

It sounds like Star Wars Galaxys with the first or third person perspective, i was hoping more along the lines of Eve Online rather than Star Wars Galaxies.

I would of thought that it might of been better going more along the lines of Star Wars: Enterprise universe, as it is a bigger galaxy to explore at Warp 5 rather then zooming around at warp 9.9 everywhere.

Enterprise won't be here, it's supposed to start an entirely new storyline branch for ST.

Doesn't stop them from renaming all the ships after it, you know they will :)

hehe exactly.

Then there's the whole thing with Trekkies being TOO fanatical about the ST universe. Worse than Star Wars fans. You could find if you even spell a name wrong, your fellow gamers would flame you constantly.

I see it ending up more well.. a trek, than an enjoyable game, with people forever telling you off if you do anything even slightly wrong. There's a roleplaying group, pretty large now, email and IRC for star trek, they are a perfect example of what it'll be like, not to mention they will try take it over as their own. I don't see them sticking to IRC or email roleplaying now.

It's ruined before its had a chance.. best bet, ban anyone who answers 20 questions about TOS correctly.. those are the worst kind ;)

and why am i not being flamed for my anti-trekkies comments? phasers can't be working right or something :E

I should have used [sarcasm] tags maybe.

i really hope we don't get morons playing this game. the pay monthly idea will put an end to most of their dreams of spoiling the game/atmosphere.

for the most part we'll see 30 year old shatner fans, along with the odd youngsters. i envision a far older playing audience (and logically more mature, although that isn't always the case), seeing as Star Trek doesn't appeal to as many youngsters as Star Wars does.

i'm hoping the game will comprise the walking/talking parts of a game like SWG/EQ/WoW, and the spaceship parts of EVE. that would be truly awesome if done properly. there's a huge amount of possibilities for a game based in the Star Trek universe. same could be said about Star Wars.

proof is in the pudding though.
