Two Star Wars fans are in a critical condition in hospital after apparently trying to make light sabres by filling fluorescent light tubes with petrol.

A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.

The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

A third person present at the incident had been questioned, police said.

Some people have no self-intelligence, do they?

I don't mind, the stupid cleanse themselves out of the gene pool. Too bad they not always die and we have to pay to fix them up again.

hmmm I think it has something to do with "natural selection" :E

nothing a visit to the trauma unit with a pillow wouldnt fix ;)

Wow, thankfully I didn't go and see episode 3, or that could have been me!

I don't know how you can make a joke out of it... it was dumb yes. Maybe its just me, but after hearing they're ina c ritical condition, with severe burns that will scar them for life. I don't feel like laughing

But that is so far away, and I am ever so lazy. :(

hmmm maybe they'll have some sort of remote thingy like they do with hunting ...you know ..hunt live animals on the net with your mouse ;)

farrow I see how it can be disturbing and not really a laughing matter but somethimes you just have to laugh at the misfortune of others ...not exactly morally reprensible but it's still worth a good laugh

No its not, not when its a permanent suffering they now face. And really stern, thats just blatant double standards. Moral standards being shunned aside for you personal enjoyment. Seriously, you're degrading your own integrity that you've spent so much time building up here.

Sorry, I don't want to carry on about this because I'l just seem like a dick. Maybe this is just more personal for me, but think for a moment. Imagine if at 17 you'd been horribly burned, and almost died... I wouldn't think that could ever be someone you look back on and laugh about.

sorry farrow, you're right ...but it's not the outcome that's funny ..it's the way it happened ..the circumstances around it is so unorthodox that you just cant help but ignore the consequences of the accident ....but you do have a point. Oh and I dont think you'll come across as a dick, you have a valid point

sometimes I'm just a bit too serious for my own good in these forums ...sometimes I have to just take off my "social conscience" that I wear like a chip on my shoulder and just to be part of the mob mentality that finds these sort of things funny. I think the recent peta threads have made me a bit weary of always playing the "social awareness" card. If I've offended you I apologize

I have to agree with Farrowlesparrow here. We've all done stupid things in our lives, and if you haven't then you're lying. Not everyone has to suffer like these people have to for the dumb things they do though. Yeah what they did was pretty stupid, but at what point does compassion kick in? Are we really so inconsiderate towards other people that someone nearly dying or being seriously scarred for life is nothing but a joke anymore?

I don't know how they thought filling the tube with gasoline would get them the effect they wanted anyway. They should have just tried to run electricity through them with extension cords and electrocuted themselves like a normal person.

/me laughs

That's some crazy shit...

Them dumbasses.

It's not really funny, but it's not exactly a tragedy either.

I consider it a simple safety message. Don't play with gasoline, let alone ignite two litres of petrol when you're holding it in your hand.

retards....they should have used lighter fluid like i do

I laugh and quote that :p

wow they are really smart...

Intelligent but not smart

Damn retards.
There's nothing to feel sorry about here.
They decided to play with explosive substances, they probably knew the consequences...
Yet they go and do it anyways.
They win the Darwin Award!

Not quite. To win a Darwin award, you actually have to die. Or possibly make yourself impotent, but I'm not so sure about that one.

Still a joke to me, this isn't stupid, this is beyod stupid.

And you know what they say, if you can't stand the heat... don't light a tube filled with gasoline.

This is what nature does, natural selection and it's damn good at its job.

You didn't offend me stern, and I can see the filling of a glass tube with petrol as being almost humerously stupid. We were talking and laughing about it at college, but when I ounf out they were in a critical condition due to severe burns, I just stopped laughing. I didn't consiously do it, I think it just really hit deep with me.

It's kind of like the show Jackass. The stuff they did was hilarious, and downright stupid. But if one of them actually died or became critically hurt I'd have a hard time finding it funny anymore.

Exactly what I meant

I've allways said idiots appear everwhere

What idiots, with the money they will spend on hospital bills they could have gotten the Master Replica Lightsabers

I'd have to say it's tragic. Two ordinary- if ill-informed and, yes, stupid- people have been hospitilised and probably scarred for life.

I can roll my eyes and think "what the hell did they expect", and then I think of all the bastards in the world- the thieves, the thugs, the drug-dealers- who commit crimes against other people and are far more worthy of this sort of "poetic justice".

I just find it difficult to be smug about cases of stupidity that only hurt the sole initiaters who had no wish to harm others- or themselves, for that matter.

...what's happening to me?! Quickly, someone ask me to describe my Moron Cull proposal, I need to kickstart the ol' fascist genes...

On the bright side, if they pull through they'll have a really cool story to use to break the ice at parties.

AHA!! you did laugh ..well in my defense, I learned from you that they were in critical condition :E

why they just use neon tubes or something like that?or buy toy ligthsabers

"hey lets fill this with gasoline ant turn it on to make light sabers"
"aye that sounds cool,I will be anakin"
*fire the gasoline*
"ahh bloody fire arrg"
"atelast I know how anakin feel at the end ahhh"

I see the news

*star wars movies banned in the UK cuz it indicites people to burn they self imitating the movie*

I'm gonna have to agree with Sparrow here. I chuckled when I first read the thread, but when I found out they were scarred, as the other people here said... it was like, "Whoa, that's not cool".

And yes, what they did was stupid... but that isn't a good reason for people to still laugh at their misfortune. I've read SOO many stupid things people did on these forums, and if any of them were serious, I wouldn't laugh at them.

Like that guy who ran into the pillar at his friends house. No harm was done except property damage, but say he got impaled or worse and managed to come out alive for some reason. I certainly wouldn't find the situation amusing despite how stupid it was for him to drive so fast going into a private property, and would feel more inclined to sympathise to him.

It is a sickening double standard sometimes, how people moan and groan about situations in politics where people get scarred and injured for life, yet somehow think its okay to laugh at the same sorts of people who have the same things happen to them when politics are not a factor at all. Sometimes I think there'd be more sympathy for an 'insurgent' who had a moltov cocktail shatter in his hand and cause aggrivated, horrible burns to his body than someone in a situation like this.
