Stargate: Source Update

Stargate was a Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Day After Tommorrow) sci-fi movie starring Kurt Russell and James Spader that was a sleeper hit in 1994. The storyline involved a transporation device that lead to another planet where all the natives resembled ancient Egyptians and worshipped the god Ra. The movie spawned a popular television show, Stargate: SG1 starring none other than MacGuyver himself, Richard Dean Anderson. It is important to note that Stargate: Source is a modification inspired by the television show, not necessarily the movie. They have recently released a few shots of one of their maps, as well as a model they have been working on. [br]

Should also mention they don't have permission too, you made it look like its something official there, and its not.

You worded it like it's an official game...

I am a very hardcore stargate fan and I have to say those pictures don't look very good at all. It looks too plain or something. I am sure they can capture the look and feel of stargate a little better than what they did. I was hoping a more talented team would be working on this but oh well. Just glad they aren't working on the actual TV series.

itd only be a work in progress more likely than not and like many mods with media being released most will look really unpolished. I do agree but, hopefully it looks more interesting later on. I dont like the show but

Yes they are works in progress, also the media update has been increased in size, you might want to check it out again. Good to hear you are a hardcore fan, this mod will be a lot more polished by release time. Also for you hardcore fans there is a video in our forums of a wip as well.

arghh stop with the shit WIPs. Really...I might start a map in about 2mins and post it for news....honestly it'll turn into one of Valves maps but at the moment it's just an untextured walll...ffs!

Well, either that or this looks shit

No offence, but the map in the first two screenshots looks like it was made in 15 minutes. The textures look very boring, aswell as the architecture.
And if it is like that because this is a WIP, don't release it!

Oh well.

so is this the 3rd stargate mod?

or are there more :s
According to modDB, there are now only 4 Stargate themed mods for Half-Life 2. There really are 5 listed, but Brokenoath broke up.

Well the map and textures are very very dull, but the models look great could use some tweaking on the textures though.

Why do I get the feeling that half of the mods for Half-Life 2 will never see the light day thanks to copyright infringement?

Most mods are never even going to see the light of day anyway...

Agreed, in a way its a shame, but in a way its a good thing, since it would just saturate the market for cheap third rate knockoff's. It's better this way, and as The Thing points out, few will make it anyway.

Course I might change my mind if mods began actually using the tools and features provided by the engine. So many WIP pics coming out and none of them seem to be beyond basic textures. Where's the making use of the engine. Might aswell have half of them on HL1 at this rate. :(

I guess it could be put down to just getting used to the new tools and features I suppose, once a couple of amazing mods turn up, it'll raise the bar so to speak for others then. Right now there's little competition other than HL1 mods. Though a few for Doom3 seem to be heading in the right direction. Be a shame to see the Source mods being left behind like FarCry. :(

Here are all the other media updates they've recently released:

Istn there an offical game being developed.
Yep, this and the others that don't have permission will likely be closed down eventually. One claims to have permission though...

I don't think news should be made for mods that are effectively breaking the law, but meh i need to fix breakfast so i don't care, later!

I'd like to see how this is illegal... we have already written to the people who are incharge of the show and they have not replied and no one can shut us down apart from MGM... we are currently not trying to do anything that would conflict with copyright laws and we're a non profit mod.... so i'd like to see what you people are talking about or are you just proclaiming your know it alls.... Proof please proof... As for an official game personally none of us have heared of one yet and you still didn't give proof for it. Their is a rumour that a team or group have gotten permission to make and sell a game but nothing more.

You really need to wake up to the real world. Just because your modification is non-profit it doesn’t mean you can take other peoples property and use it as your own without permission.

I only know of one game that has the permission and rights to create a game based on Stargate and that is the creators of Stargate: Alliance http://www.stargate-alliance.com/main.php?lang=en

I’m afraid until you find permission to develop this modification you wont see further updates appear on this site.

aha! I knew I'd heard one of them had got permission.

heh is it any surprise that the one that asked for permission and got it, also happens to look rather excellent too :)

Now that just shouts effort to me.

Here's how things generally work when dealing with copyrighted intellectually property: the answer is "No" until you specifically hear otherwise.
we are currently not trying to do anything that would conflict with copyright laws and we're a non profit mod....
The very fact you're creating a game using copyrighted material without permission is a conflict of copyright laws. Whether or not you're doing it "for profit" is irrelevant.
so i'd like to see what you people are talking about or are you just proclaiming your know it alls....
I don't "know it all", but I do know this. A relevant example is the recent demise of the Duke Nukem: Source mod. Joe Siegler from 3D Realms (owners of the Duke Nukem franchise) explained it thusly:
We don't allow folks to use our game characters / music / artwork / level design / any other materials in a mod or TC for any game. If we allow these things without stopping them, we could lose control of the franchise from a legal standpoint; something we can't let happen.

As much as we like fans of our work, as was pointed out already a few times, we have to protect our properties. If we do not, then we could possibly lose control of them, and that's something we simply can't allow, even as much as we might want to allow mods like this. Please try and understand, and don't just go "Ah, screw 3DR, they're a big company - I'll do it anyway!"
