Alright, my 240z is getting to the point where I'm almost positive it will be on the road in 6 months. Needless to say, my mind is already excited with the possibility of starting a new project car.

Right now, the plan is to sell my Chevelle for 10,000 to 12,000 and purchase a Pontiac Lemans or Tempest somewhere in the 1965-1967 range. I'm planning to spend somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,500 to 6000 depending on the condition of the project car.

Now, I've never been overly fascinated with drag racing. Sure, the occasional street race, but I enjoy cars that turn. However, for one reason or another 1/8th mile drag racing has caught my attention. My plan as it is now:

1. Get a Pontiac

2. Build up a mild small block chevy for under 1,800 dollars.

A. Hopefully I can get near 400 horse to the flywheel on the motor.

B. 1. Port/Polished Vortec Heads with enlarged Valves - $600
2. Performer RPM intake manifold - $175
3. Holley 750 Double Pumper Carb - $300
4. I'll probably just fish around for a run-of-the mill 2 bolt short block and leave it as is. Maybe $300 bucks
5. Stock ignition plus other stuff - $250
6. Mild Strip Cam - $140

Note: Dyno2003 says it's possible

3. Find an 8.5" 10 bolt posi rear end, and put in 4.88 gears into it.

4. Tub out the back of the car, and stuff in some Mickey Thompson 325 Drag Radials

5. Get a plate nitrous kit. (Leaning towards the Edelbrock Performer RPM kit) and put a 100 shot through it.

6. Acquire a run of the mill TH400 3 speed transmission and put in a ~3000 ish stall converter.

7. Gut the car. (Nothing Extreme)

My goal is to get into the low sixes.

Will I achieve my goal?
Will the stock pistons hold to 500 horsepower?
Will I be able to drive it on the free way?
Will I be the fasted car in town?

Probably not.

But hopefully I'll be close.

Will I beat my step Dad's 600 Horsepower 1970 Chevelle SS from 0 to 80?

Hell yes I will.

I think it might be possible to get into the sixes with near 500 horse to the wheel, and running that much tire. I'll definitely have to mess with the suspension though, or I won't be going anywhere fast.

Input?
