Steam Account logs on, but half life 2 or any other game does not load up

Guys steam is really starting to piss me off.

Initially I had problems trying to connect to steam but now it seems to connect everytime. However when I load up something like half life 2 or CS:S the game remains on that preparing to play half life 2 screen and it just remains there doing nothing. This is after getting the updates and all that encryption crap, can someone help!!!!!!!!

ok dude I have validated half life 2, what do I do next?

Btw my computer is connected via a 3com ADSL llg firewall router, still says preparing to play half life 2 then it just stays there.. :rolling:
Also may I add sometimes when connecting to play internet connection goes off, and then comes back on.... When I was validating it did that 3 times...
