Steam and my original HL1

I have an original version of Half-Life i bought many years ago. The other day i decided to install ol' Half-Life again so i could play some of the awesome mods i used to play. Now all the sudden i need Steam to run it, and after i go through all the poo to get Steam, it says that my CD-key is already registrated in Steam (Error name: Duplicated Key) ......... thing is, ive never had Steam before nor have i given my CD-key to anyone.

What the hell can i do? Anyone know if theres a way to reset your CD-key? Ive searched the Steam support site but so far no solutions. Help me!

Alternatively, if you have any of the following retail CD-keys:

Day of Defeat
Counter-Strike: Source
Half-Life: Blue Shift
Half-Life: Opposing Force

They should work and give you full access to all original Valve titles (excluding the Source based ones).

Have you yet bought Half-Life 2? What happens when you open your Steam account that has Half-Life 2 on it? Do you have access to Half-Life in there?

Thanks for the links... but that's a awful lot of work for something that should be working. I might as well buy a new HL1 ;(

and nope, i have the original HL and havent got HL2

Might i be so unlucky that my CD-key have been generated by some sort of key generator? Though it seems unlikely i see no other reason this is not working...
