When I Installed Windows XP, I tweaked my SecPol.msc so that only the administrator (me) was allowed access to this computer, etc...

I noticed that in my User Rights Assignmnet, after Installing HL2 & Steam, that it re-enters the user "SUPPORT_388945a0" as a user able to log-in as a batch job.

Additionally, it also creates a share at "System\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex"

I notice that this is behavior similar to a virus, and I hope that Valve can fix this issue.

Tell Valve. If they consider it to be an issue, they'll fix it.

Here are instructions how to secure steam (more to come):

Start -> Run ->

Type in secpol.msc

Under security settings, click the + next to Local Policies, then click User Rights Assignment. Remove ALL enteries from Log on as a batch job.

Under Secuirty Options, Network access: Remotely accessible registry paths, delete the entry as shown in image attached.

This should secure your computer from any hackers that decide to take advantage of Steam's named share pipes and user accounts it creates on your computer. Steam will still work after doing this, although it takes a tad bit longer for it to log in to Steam.

I have that user disabled on my XP install and even after installing HL2 and Steam it is still disabled. I'm running SP1. Are you running SP2?

No. I refuse to upgrade to SP2 cause its too flawed. I am shure that I disabled that account, but I uninstalled Steam and re-installed it and it re-created that account. Maby it's just my copy of Steam, I dont know. I purchased it through BestBuy.com, maby they put somthin on it.

Although I did install the WMP9 codecs but as soon as I installed the codecs, I deleted the files it creates in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\*, and all the corrisponding in the system32 directory (so that it don't automatically un-delete them).

You think SP2 is too flawed? And non-SP2 isn't? Wow.....

You think BestBuy may have modified your copy of Steam?

Don't drink the water - they put something in it....
