Steam bites!

After spending about an hour loading the game, and blah blah blah. Then everytime I want to start the game it takes 5 min for it to load, Ive come to the conclusion that Steam and half life 2 bites. I am not going to spend 5 min just waiting for a game to load!

Yes the graphics are awesome, yes the game play is great, but so what? The security is to draconian. Yes I understand that valve was violated. Yes I understand the reasoning. But understand this, I dont wait on a game, either it comes up and I can play it, or it goes in the trash. I will not ever purchase a game with security like this again. If that means I dont play anymore games, then so be it!

Now.......How do I get my account with steam deleted so that I can sell my copy to someone that likes sitting around waiting for a game to install.

It takes me around 30 seconds at the absolute maximum for HL2 to load up for me. Maybe its something wrong with your computer?

well I admit my system is only a p3 2.4 and only has a radeon 9700 and has 512k of memory. And Im conneted with a 4meg cable system. Maybe its to old to play this game.

Other games I play including UT2K4 run great and only take seconds to load.

I don't mean system specs, I mean maybe something isn't tweaked right, or maybe something is actually wrong.

Maybe so..... but other than steam taking so long to verify my account and to start hl2 what could be wrong?

No idea. Steam for me works extremelly slow but I know why. My university connection does not work well with Steam, it doesn't outright block it like some universities but it causes my download speeds from steam to be around 6 kilobytes/second.

I don't know how slow this could make it but I do know that people with hard drives that are working slowly will experience very long load times. 5 minutes does seem like too much to be attributed to a hard drive but things you have to ask yourself is have you defragmented recently? How full is your hard drive?

Other than that the only thing I could think of slowing it down would be adware, spyware or viruses. Something taking up memory while loading HL2.

hmm interesting...i have a p4 2.4ghz 1gb ram and the basic cable internet striat from the company and mine takes oh maybe a minute and a half to load. so i would have to say your comp is messed up in some way and you should probubly look into it before complaining about steam which ive beat the game on and played quite a few hours on cs:s without the slightest hint of a problem. (note: wrote this either at the same time as the post above or i missed it but it looks like your looking into it so forget i said that end part)

No, its not Steam.
Steam is wonderfull and good.
I thank god daily since tueday for the awe and wonderment of the software they call Steam.

But seriously, it takes me about a minute to start the game when it works. However 3 of the about 7 times I've launched HL2 I've had to wait about 8 minutes for the fricken files to authenticate, again.
Perhaps this is whats happening to you, paratwa.

Yeah that must be whats happening.......Why does it have to verify the files so many times? Isnt it over doing it? Im still not going to purchase another game that uses such draconian methods. It just takes to long.
