I just got back from a trip and noticed this steam problem. Whenever I try and start up a game the window pops up saying "preparing to play half life", and disapears. Usually, it would cut right to the game, but once it goes, another window pops up 5 seconds later, saying the same thing.
Once i close the program, a emergency window pops up:
Program: C: Progra~1\steam\steam.exe
File: \p4clients\rel_beta\projects\common\misc\Win32registry.cpp
line: 447
bCloseRet == 0L

If this helps, My system Specs are Athlon 2600+ Radeon 9800 pro, Windows XP,
512 megs ddr ram, 60 gig HD, 9gigs left,
I ran norton today, nothing picked up. I defraged 2 weeks ago. I reinstalled Steam thrice today. Please Help Me Guys

Is it trying to update anything? Check the monitor.
Not really sure.

I don't know. Check the steam forums or something.

Sounds like when you uninstall, the uninstaller isn't removing all the registry keys. If you feel really comfortable you can go into your registry and remove and left over steam entries. Going into your registry can be dangerous, it can really mess up your computer bad. If you decide to do so, make a back-up copy of your registry before you change anything.

When you uninstall make sure you delete everything including the valve folder.

Yeah also check the registry out, backup first. Then find the steam tree and delete everything contained in it.

try uninstalling, deleting and reinstalling

I just uninstalled and deleted every shred of steam or valve, then reinstalled. Its still NOT working and the same problem persists
