Steam causes choppiness Fix disable internet?

[terrific]

When i play hl2 with steam open it lags the game. Single player i mean. When i ALT - tab and disable my internet after the game has started. Then the game plays smooth as silk as it should. What is steam doing in the background that is causing this problem? Will lowering its priority in Windows fix this? I need steam to play multi so this lag will always be online too unless i can find a way around this. Please help.

Hrmm, I'm not fully sure on this but when you run Half Life 2/ CS:S through steam (the way you are supposed to) it could be that you are catching some lag from valve's servers. They check content before you start HL2 up and its possible there is some ongoing process lagging you. Not sure though, just a guess.
