sorry i know this may sound like a strange question but i've just got a new hard drive and would like to move my steam directory to the new drive without messing up my account. Is it possible to do a simple cut and paste from one drive to the other or will i have to do a fresh install?

You'll likely need to do a fresh install of Steam, but bare in mind in your C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps folder you should have a load of files that end in .gcf. These are the files that are needed for games to run so you can copy those over. They can also be backed up onto CD by right clicking on a game in your Games list and selecting "Backup".

Re

ok thanks, is it possible to keep the directory files for mods(and copy them over) so that i wont need to completely reinstall CS:S and all my skins?

this may sound like a random thing but i have low diskspace on a slower drive so i would like to copy it over.

sorry also i dont know if this is relevant to the board but i own hl2 retail, is the only way for me to get DOD source to buy it in the shops as a standalone package when it comes out?

any help would be much appreciated.

You should also be able to purchase it directly from Steam when it's available. In fact, it may even be possible to do this already. What happens if you click on Browse Games? You should see it in the list as a standalone product.

(I can't as I bought it as part of a HL2 package on Steam).

You can also copy your SourceMods folder. If you also want to keep your Counter-Strike: Source directory, you will likely find that at C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Your account name\ and then copy any of the files across from here too.

oh yeah i remember now it just says you have already purchased half life 2 on steam but its inside a the gold and silver package boxes which is quite odd :S

Just edited this in above:
