steam doesnt work

Hey,
I just got HL2 and installed perfectly
then went to run it, now steam starts updating then goes thru and starts again, then closes....

Any help????

running celeron 2.4 256mb ram, my pc is fine with most other games

steam will first update itself, then send you to register your game, after that it will download the decrypting files. And to top it it updates the game afterwards. Took me one hour on a modem (56kbps).
Have patience

Your PC is fine with other games?... Wich games? Celeron 2.4 with 256 MB RAM is not very good. It has nothing to do with the problem you have but don't ask yourself why the loadtimes will take ages... Anyway, you could try deleting your client registry.blob (make sure Steam is closed), then log in and Steam will download the new content.
