Now that was one hell of a bad decision.

With all the problems being posted on here that nobody can really answer. Bringing down the steam forums is madness.

Obvious why. They dont want prospective buyers coming to the conclusion it's easier opening a bank account than accessing the game. They have royally screwed up.

I don't know about royally screwed up, but the game is extremely buggy and I think they know that there will be tons of posts and it would just make the board useless if there is a post being made every 10 seconds for a new topic. A IRC channel on quakenet would be a better way to discuss the game for now.

I think royally screwed up is a bit harsh. I can't imagine how many people around the world are happily playing HL2.

As far as helping people with problems though it's very poor form to suspend the steam forums.

If I has serious problems even unlocking the game (which I haven't, thank god) I'de be livid.

Well I am livid as I cannot unlock the game. I did not expect fort knox when I purchased and that is precisely what we have here. I am constantly receiving the warning 'unable to authenticate original disk within time limit' Go on valve website they don't have this problem on their list. I am not a happy bunny.

i got texture errors which makes the weapons in my hands flicker constantly

I agree, an awful way of going about things, if you have paid good money to purchase the game (i have purchased on DVD) you should be able to install and play straight away.

I am in the UK and still have not been able to get the registration page to load up. Therefore, no game to play.

Ridiculous.

I just blame Steam. If it vanished from the planet I couldn't be happier- I can easily live with downloading little pre-bundled .exe patches to solve bugs.

I can't live with spending hours trying to play a game I bought from a shop (despite the lack of a manual) so I'd have something palpatable to take home. Ironically, Steam resents that.

*goes back to whinging and cursing*

There is only one disc in the case isn't there. Seriously never known anything like this. Steam updated, instructions followed. Game downloaded ok. Click on the HL2 icon nothing then about a minute later 'unable to authenticate original disc within time limit.'

The whole package looks like it's been put together as a joke. Where is the manual?...one disc? WTF

I just went to a local (not very small) computer store. I know one of the ppl who work there and he said they already had a lot of HL2 back in stock, about 100 copies were already back b/c ppl got home, tried to play, couldn't and brought it back. What a...mess. I hope it's better for me when I get home.

Scope for cock ups with this process are huge and appear to be self prophesising. This is the sort of decision that can bankrupt a company. Not sure if reinstalling is going to make any difference.

Isn't it true Valve didn't do the case and shop version but vivendi or something.

I'd blame them first

lucky for those that bought dvd versions, those of us on steam i don't know how we get a refund

Guess we're going to have to wait for a statement from someone in authority on this. They are probably, one would hope looking into this now and wondering where they go from here.

No problems here with Steam version.

I think that there are a lot of people happy with this game.

Very poor support on valve's part, this is just going to make anger customers even more angry......

They're crapping themselves expansion. That's why their forum is down because they closed it fearful of the backlash.

the servers are probably taking quite a bit of a beating at the moment, or maybe Valve have done something so that more steam preloaders are getting authed than box owners. I got the steam preload and it downloaded the last piece and unlocked for me in a mere 15 minutes! So keep trying guys! It is well worth it.

I downloaded everything, bought retail cd. Followed all the instructions yet click on HL2 desktop; on or offline and nothing. A minute later disk unrecognised due to time limit. I am not alone here. A number of people have the same problem.
