We may not like to admit it but we are interested in seeing the gradual shifts in technology that the average Steam gamer is using. Stats collected throughout July have now been added to the Steam hardware survey including stats from Mac platforms too.[br]The ATI Radeon HD 5800 & 5700 series have seen a large rise, 56% of users are now on DX10 with Windows 7 64bit and quad core CPUs are up more than dual cores (still a long distance behind though).[br]New is the software survey now showing which programs are most commonly installed on computers with Steam. Surprisingly Steam gets 100%, in second is Flash Player (96%), Acrobat Reader (73%), Firefox (63%), MS Office (57%). See the full Hardware & Software survey here.

Heh, I'm one of the 16% using Windows XP despite having a Direct X10 GPU.

Feel free to throw rotten vegetables at me anytime you want. :D

Steam scans your system to see what other software you have installed? Didn't know that. Not really something I want them nosing around in.

Glad to see OpenOffice has quite a good uptake on windows machines. Doesn't look like the same is true of VLC though.

Also 63% of steam users have firefox. That's pretty amazing if you ask me.

Same. They going to start scanning system for media files too?

They scan for software?
I feel violated now :)
Are they perhaps also trying to find out how much share their competition has this way?

Lol, you can see the percentage of Mac Users that torrent

Yeah... didn't know they were scanning for installed software. Was that some fine print on the survey acceptance dialog? I'm also surprised at the number of people playing on (server?) 2003.

I think they mentioned it as part of a steam update report but no one noticed.

"Surprisingly Steam gets 100%" It surprised you that a "steam" hardware survey showed that every user uses steam??

They did mention that it would be scanning for software and you had the choice of whether it did or not. Personally I don't care if it does, I don't see how it's a breach of privacy or anything.

When it asked me to take part in the survey it told me it was going to scan for software aswell. It tells you which software it has found in the results before it uploads it to Valve.

I like this, always nice to see what everyone else is running. Though I see more macbooks that imac's for some reason...

I didn't take part in the survey, I must have got rid of the popup without realising.

on a slighly different note, is it just me or has there been loads of news coming out recently?
