hi there,
in before june 2005 i was playing cs, css using steam. so i had no problems playing HL2 and HL1. but then i had to pack my computer up since i was moving to africa.. :( and down here the internet is soo slow (downloading with around 0,5kp/s...) so i sadly had to say byebye to my online gamming. but the reason why i purchased HL2 was that it was the best game of 2004 and ofcourse a must have, (and obviosly that i cant play anything else than single player games down here) so now when i want to play HL2 it opens steam (ofcourse), but then, i have to update steam, so i left my computer for 2 days and then on the 2nd day it had reched 44% and jumped out. so i tried again and again and every time it jumped out from 39-67%.

now this is troubleing me alot, because it is a single player game, and i have to update somthing(which i cant) to play the game, even though im not using that... so my questions is:

Isnt there any other way of playing HL2 without using steam?
and maybe there is a place where i can download the update manually?

plz help me out here, because
i am borred to death, and raely miss
HL2

thanx

The .blob and platform.gcf simply stores information on your computer. See it as an internet cookie that stores your password and the Steam host server you're on. Sometimes those Steam host servers can go offline, resulting that you suddenly can't connect anymore, or (as in your case) the download simply stalls after a time-out with it. When you delete them, they get automatically reset and a new server is chosen. (Hopefully, this one will last longer than the one you're using right now :p)

ok sounds good, will try that,

thanx....

We'll check if your firewall options are set correctly.

ok, now i need real help, i did wut you said said, deleting the two files, and now when i am opening steam (then it starts to update autematically) it says:

ERROR: Steam.exe(main exception): unable to start steam engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e8c8) failed with error 201: Cannot perform this operation while ofline

but i am online, my internet is connected right now...
maybe i should delete steam from my system, go and download Steam (and if im lucky it has the latest updates?)
then ill connect on my old account
(unless u only can only connect by registering a new account... but i dont have my old cd key :(

plz help...
thanx in advanced

Quite odd :/
You're one of the very few that it doesn't work with :/

Well, yes you can download Steam again at www.steampowered.com .
But it's only the installer (600 KB) I'm afraid, there is no such thing as manual installing updates :p

Weird Error :| ... if you re-download steam you will have to do all the steam platform updates along with starting the HL2 updates all over again and yes you can connect using your old account, if you wanted a new one you would need another CD key which isn't in use.

#"!¤... ok, ill try to see if i can find the files in my trash can, and put them back into their original spot..
