I would be posting this in the Steam forums, except that when I registered they never sent me a confirmation email, and thus they aren't letting me post. support@steampowered.com hasn't gotten back to me, and I'm not suprised.
During the Steam installation process, the part where it transfers your existing mods to Steam, I decided to try to double-click the Steam tray icon. This apparently froze Steam. I killed it, and restarted it, and it totally skipped that section of the installation, updated HL and TFC, and finished the installation.
However, now my Steam HL doesn't work. Normal HL is fine, playing TFC 1.6 and CS 1.6 works fine, but HL and any mods I try to play are busted.
I have a number of HL mods installed, however only HLRally appears under the "Third party mods" list. I'm not sure what order content is moved from HL to Steam during the process I cut off, and what kind of things it does while it's moving files. It takes a really long time to move mods over...it must be doing something.
So, I could either just re-copy my HL folder to my steam cache, and hope that steam is robust enough to figure it out and do the work to make it compatible. However, if steam wasn't robust enough to restart the conversion that I interrupted, I don't think that will work. I could also reinstall Steam, but I don't like that option, as I don't like having to reinstall software Windowz-style every time it goes wrong, and besides, there are eight million CS kiddies trying to download at this moment, and if I reinstall, I'm gunna be waiting in line.
Or, I could wait for the HL patch. I can still play all my mods with HL, so there's no harm done. I could just wait for the HL patch to make everything okay.
Can I get some input before I ravage my hard drive?
