Steam/Install Trouble

Heys guys, I just bought half life 2 episode 1 and 2 .
I tried to download it, and it started downloading steam , than after I enter the product key for the game it says, Steam:Working:Connecting. Than after about 5 minutes it takes me too a new box.

Steam is unavailable .

Cannot connect to Steam server because it is either disabled or your computer cannot connect to the steam network ...

I have disabled all my firewalls, so what is stopping it ?
Is there anyway I can get around this ?

It certainly is.

Affected services will include the Steam Community, in-game matchmaking, downloading games and making purchases from the Steam store. Games that do not rely on Steam matchmaking services should remain playable.

Which includes you and updating the game. This is a rare event for Steam (major maintenance like this) so you'll have to just wait for a bit.
