So, regular day, I start steam up and it starts updating. K. Within 10 seconds it reaches 26% - and then it comes up with "Steam is already running. You may only have one copy of steam running at one time". I have tried several times and it still does this.

I had a little glitch too. After the update I hit Restart Now, but it never showed up in the tray, so I had to close it via Task manager and start it manually.

But yours won't even get past 26%?

geez, this is not that complicated
close steam, and open it again, waiting about 10 sec before opening it again, and then it should work, if not then this is really dumb, just reinstall, or i think you could get the updatewith a browser , and place in the correct place. the error itself is not that complicated, having not had this error before, i think that maybe you might have steam updating, and it tries to open again. that would do it.

I have it that its open in Task Manager, but its not on the taskbar or anything. I have to end the process and start again :(

Don't reinstall, ctrL+alt+del

go to process and find steam.exe

A: Delete your Sys32 file.
If that doesn't work,
B: Throw PC out of window.
