Steam keeps updating my games then crashes.

I have this really annoying problem in where my games are all 100% ready, yet when i try to play them Steam starts updating them then crashes soon after.This is happening to all my games, and i know there hasn't been i recent update for quite alot of them so i haven't a clue what it's downloading as the update. I can't tell Steam not to download the updates or to go into offline mode cause then it gives me "This game is currently unavalible try again later" error. So far i've tried deleting the client blob thingy and that hasn't help.
