Why doesn't Valve release the best of the best maps on Steam, so that everyone can have them?

It's annoying to make a top-notch map, and only have 2% of players ever even hear of your map, even if it's better than all the others.

Besides, I'm happy to sit and wait for Steam Updates. It makes me think I'm getting new stuff for the game.

(im posting here, hoping that Valve will hear and make something of this. If this is futile here, can someone tell me who to contact? Valve has thus far ignored a revolutionary use for Steam; custom map distribution on a regular basis)

That is a Damn good Idea. I've seen alot of great maps that dont get the repect that they deserve. I'm all for it!

But then all the monkeys would moan when their "leet" map didn't get chosen, even though it was "better than all the others".

I think it would be better if, they selected say 5 of the best entered maps per month, and have a monthly vote on the 5 maps, so that all the players vote for their favourite one, that way people can't moan if their map didn't get picked as more then 1 would have been up for vote, if you get me ?

well really most of the people dont play custom maps because they dont want to download them

I would much rather wait 5 mins to download a map than wait 10 mins to download some dumb servers 30megs of stupid sounds...

These maps for example should be played more: http://www.bluestrike.be/maps/halflife2.html

They are as good as any official map

And they also lag like a machine. Not to say they aren't good maps, they are, I've known Blue for a while and he is a talented mapper...

how would that make a difference even if it was official there can still be sounds to download

What? I was talking about the downloading aspect. I'd much rather wait to download a map (which you said people don't want to do) than wait to download gay sounds (which we are forced to do daily by default).

Anything over a minute is considered long by me. And I could actually care less about the wait, it's the fact that there is no reason to be downloading all these stupid sound files.

Sigh... obviously you don't understand my point...

I do, and I agree.

Download a map while I'm doing something else in Windows? Yes. I'll just do something else while it downloads.

Download retarded server sounds while Im trying to connect to a server, staring at the progress bar for what seems like an eternity? No. Not while I'm trying to play.

Besides, 100% of the time I don't want to hear those stupid server sounds. They're either too loud and annoying, or too annoying and annoying.

Yeah, that would no-doubt happen. Valve should email the mappers who make the best maps and say, "If you want your map to be released over Steam, here's what you need to change..." And list off a bunch of performance and layout problems that need to be fixed, as well as visual elements, like lighting, etc, that need to be "professionalized."

And remember, in the HL2 DM Mapping Contest, Valve took the maps and optimized them themselves...

I think STEAM distribustion would be good, but only if it didn;t distract vavle form more imprtant things.

I agree, but keeping the games alive is important. Since Valve didnt do this when it counted, HL2: DM mostly died too early. Only 2 maps...

But yeah, the mappers can do their own optimizing. Someone from Valve just has to say what to optimize.

They might believe that maps should be part of the community effort, and theat's why they don't distribute them.

lol... That's one way of looking at it. I'm afraid I can see where you're coming from, too.

Edit: Oh, I think I misunderstood. Well, the community would take mapping 50 times more seriously if they knew that every HL2 player on the planet would get their map if it's good enough.
