Steam + Ports

How can I tell if I have these ports open (Steam won't load up, goes to the screen asking to rety, go offline or quite ;()

Erm, I take it your connecting through a router, but seeing as I don't know what router you have, it's gonna be a little harder . You need to get to the settings page of your router, (on mine, I type in the routers ip in the address bar) and go to "port forwarding".

There you need to make a new port assignment, firstly:

Starting Port: 1200
Ending Port: 1200
IP : <Your router ip, mines 192.168.0.1>

You need to do 3 assignments, the other two being

Starting Port: 27000
Ending Port: 27015

Starting Port: 27030
Ending Port: 27039

Thanks, I don't know what hardware I'm dealing with (like routers) because I'm using a connection point in my room.

Are there any programs which can tell you if the ports are open?

erm yeh I've got one called 'Port Detective' - try googling it. But generally, if Steam doesn't work, the ports blocked
