Now I've ignored the whole Steam preload thing because of a pre-order but I might be cancelling it so I need a question answered about it:

What happens if you format? Will you be able to back it up and then put it back in?

Your able to burn anything you download from steam onto a CD and then copy back when your ready to play again. Also steam acts as an account service where you can access and download the content that you purchased anywhere in the world with an internet connection. So, yes you can back up downloaded cache files and put them back where they were instead of downloading them all over again.

I think that if you burn all the .gcf files you should be set.

Unless you have a DVD-writer or you want to spend time making split .zip or .rar archives, you might as well just re-download them from Steam. Everything gets logged under your account.

Unless, of course, you have a slow connection.

Well sadly I've chucked myself in the deep end and I have about 3.34Gb to download.

98.4% left.
