Steam problem

Ok i decided to play half-life again to get the story in my head right... I copyied the game from my old hard drive. Come to find out i copied the original version with no updates to it or CS and i wanted to update it. When i opened steam and put in my cd key it started downloading updates only one problem I think the damn thing is downloading both of the games full version seperately and not recognizing the game is installed already (it just knows i have a cd key and im entitled to it) any help plz....

You need to actually install the game to have it convert. Steam can't see a bunch of orphaned files sitting on your HD somewhere. You need the registry entries.

ha.. looks like i screwed myself on this one im already getting to the end of the game and ill be damned if i start over

btw I have a 56k connection soo i think that had a lot to do with all of this

EDIT: Copy the save files!!! I cannot express this clearly enough ... silly

EDIT 2: 56k conenction has nothing to do with nothing. I'm on 56k and Steam is my wonderful friend

Indeed so ... also why didn't you install it in the first place? It's not as if there are that many settings you might have changed but then, what do I know (nuffin')

Therefore, a word of advice: always clean install if possible - it'll avoid big problems in the long term!
