Steam Problems Thread

sticky? I figured we should have one of these in here. State the problem, and if anyone has a answer...

Anyways, for me...my files get done being converted, but when i try to install mods it just locks up. When i go into hl properties and try to switch to "Update this game automaticly" steam freezes. When i try to play a game steam freezes...werd.

How long have you waited, Arn? Sometimes Steams seems like it's frozen and even says not responding, but it may actually be doing something.

i havent waited long i just open task manager and it says not responding so i close it, i will wait a few min this time

EDIT: it works now for some reason, now i will try to run a game

well i tried opening cs and this
"Preparing to play Counter-Strike." box has been up for a while, is this normal with all the traffic on steam. do other people have this problem.

when ever i open steam when i restart my computer, no text is there, and whenever i type in something in it doesnt appear. so its basically a blank window with two entry boxes.

p.s. i think this thread is going to be getting more problems than sollutions.

It froze when trying to 'convert half life files' so now I have to download them. It started downloading at 10 k/s then froze. Now it just freezes whenever I try to do anything. lol. The beta was never this buggy for me, what a piece of useless compiled code. They should rename it to hard drive space waster.

This version of steam seems so unstable to me it reminds me of the beta versions two years ago (or maybe a year ago .. i don't remember when was that ..) but its so buggy and unstable IMO

steam freezez alot in game menu cause its dlaoding the menus as it goes along... itll also freeze first time u try and enter a server cuase itll be dloading some stuf...including the map sometimes... and at the rate dlaods are going cause of the load... thatll take some time... when a game freezes just let it be for approx half an hour... then close it and try again and leave it till it dloads.

How do I make Steam ask me if I want to convert my Half-Life files to Steam? ... never tried tbh but did u rename ur game fodler found in ur steamcache/email directory ? or create a new account?

This version of steam seems so unstable to me it reminds me of the beta versions two years ago (or maybe a year ago .. i don't remember when was that ..) but its so buggy and unstable IMO ... steam uses internet as its processor in a way...dunno how to explain it..but whatever u do its gunna dload something, especialy if ur doing something in particular for the first time.. give the servers some time to cool off, it should be faster. if ur talkin about something else ur screwed


obviously i dun exactly study steam but i know this trough experience... and friends' experience while fiddlin around with the beta.

To n0luck: Well actually, I installed, deleted, and re-installed Steam. In this process, I had converted my Half-Life files to Steam using my only e-mail account. In the new install, it did not ask me to convert. In my Steam/SteamApps/, there is only the platform.gcf. No e-mail folder, no nothing.

I have tried creating a folder named after my e-mail and transferring my entire Half-Life directory to Steam/SteamApps/E-Mail/Half-Life/ but it does not work.

I have also tried making a new account, but it only asks me where I want to store my games for Steam, not if I want to convert.

in the steam monitor it keeps bouncing from not downloading, to downloading every game at really high speeds. it does that every 10 seconds

Steam - Error

I've installed Steam several times and I end up at the same point each time. Once I'm ready to log-on to Steam I get an error message that says either the ‘Steam network is down, or that my internet connection is down.’ My connection is fine, the Steam beta worked fine... I can even change my password and make other changes, but as soon as I log-on the error pops up. Any ideas why I receive the ‘Steam network is down / your internet connection is down’ error?

i already have the base thing installed, for the 380 mb do i have to uninstall steam and start over with that? or can i just move some files around?

You can install the 380mb installer right over the top of another install.

I installed steam last night and didn't bother to play it. This morning I noticed a that the WinMgmt.exe service was running and disabled it. I fired up steam a little later and I had the same error as you. As soon as I started it back up again it worked. This is all on W2k Pro. Hope that helps.

repeat above step several times until steam says game is up to date then try to check cache status
steam crashes

game says up to date, steam has been left open and is not downloading anything....try to run game, gets to in game loading screen, says "could not connect to content server"
steam crashes, game exits
