I currently own several hard drives and have Steam installed on my F drive. I recently reformatted my C drive and left the Valve folder intact on F. I simply reinstalled XP then reinstalled Steam into the same directory on F and I was able to play immediately. I wasn,t required to download all the games again and Steam recognized that all the games were on my system including the HL2 preload that started downloading from were it left off. Those without extra drives could burn the Steam directory to a dvd as a way of backing it up then. :P

I forgot to ask one question though. Is it possible to uninstall any games you download independantly? I really have no use for games like CS 1.6 of some of the older titles like TFC so can they be removed to make the Steam directory smaller so I could fit it on a dvd.

Yup ... just look at the properties for a game and do delete local content.

Also, although you may be pleased with your discovery, it is the whole idea behind Steam's download system. Your method is also rather dangerous as file conflicts can and probably will occur on some setups. Best method: burn the GCF files to a DVD, NOT the whole directory, then add them back later once Steam is reinstalled.

Again, if what you say is true and to date it hasn,t been, why burn the cfg files to a dvd when they are already in the directory to begin with? Wouldn,t it be easier to simply delete all other files in the directory except the ones you want to keep and then reinstall Steam again into that directory. This is all for not as it simply works they way I described above anyway.
