Steam screws up Internet connection

After Steam did it's latest update, I could not connect to the internet any longer and wound up reinstalling windows. I didn't know at the time that it was caused by Steam but everything was ok until I again installed Half Life 2 (and it's bastard brother, Steam). Lo and behold, could not connect to the internet. To cut a long story short, I had to re-enter my user name and password on the connection, even though they were already there. This Steam bollocks should be flushed away like the turd that it is.
 
i have had similar problems - the solution which i find best is to first of all click in 'uninstall' in both 'half life 2' and 'steam' -
restart windows, remove the half life 2 dvd, put it in the box,
hide the box away somewhere where you won't see it, then check these forums every week or so to see if a miracle cure has been found, or they are offering a refund...
