Steam searches for game updates and never finds any....

everytime i try to start up half life 2 it starts this whole searching for game update thing but it searches for game updates and doesnt ever stop... i try to start it after i disable my internet connect and i used to be able to play it off line but for some reason now i cant... some help me. i hate steam and want to finish half life!!!!!

There is no seracing for updates dialogue as far as I know ... is there a progress bar? A time left? If you open up the monitor window at the same time does anything happen? Is you net connection doing anything? When did your problem start?
In future, give us a little more info ... and unfortunately I feel it's unlikely to be a steam problem given what you've told us.

i just try to start the game and a little bar comes up that says "searching for updates" and goes .......... over and over. no progress bar, it just says that. internet connection is fine.

Validate your game files first, THEN try other stuff.
