I was just wondering, is it possible for someone to steal your cd-key that you used to registered with steam? I't just that I installed Steam when it first came out, deleted it cause it was crap then, re-ionstalled it a couple of days ago and it won't recognise me serial number?

Now understandably, I'm pissed off 'cause I bought Half-Life 1 the day it came out and my serial for it won't work under steam. I noticed a nice, 'bout time, feature that had been added to steam in case maybe I got my username and password wrong which let me type in my original half-life cd key and an e-mail would be sent to the owner of the cd key with the username and password.

I checked all my e-mail accounts, 'cause I can't remember which one it was I intially registered steam with. And low and behold!....nothing. I didn't get any e-mail, which leads me to believe that someone has stolen my cd key somehow. So does anyone know if that's a possibility?

Then could of stolen it, but they would of gotten your login/password, not your CD key.

You probably just forgot which email you signed up with, think hard! :)

I just checked all the e-mails I've ever had and had no luck. It's no major deal, I'll just have to buy HL again, or wait for HL2 o get a steam key. It's just a pain.

Go to a used game store, and buy an old copy for $5. That's what I did, and I just used the key to install it through Steam.

Dude the same crap happened to me, I never got my email so I have to send my CD key to valve so they can unregister it to whatever the hell account i made when steam first came out... its gay i know =(

Really? Shit, I knew I wasn't going crazy! I heard that you can scan in the cd cover with the key on it and they'll send you a new one or something like that. I might just do that tonight. Hopefully I'll get a reply, does anyone know who I should send the scan to? If noone knows its cool. I'm sure I'll find it somewhere.

Yeah, in fact today I just put my CD key paper in an envelope addresses to valve. Here are the details (a copy/paste job from a deep cave within steampowered.com):

If everything else has failed, your last option is to mail in your CD key and have us reset it. This is a slow and potentially expensive process, and we don't recommend that you do this except as a last resort.

Please note that when we reset your CD key, we'll remove it from the account that has currently registered it. In addition, please note that we are unable to reset CD keys that have been banned by VAC.

To have us reset your CD key, please mail us the following (by postal mail, not email):
- The original printed CD key (ie, just the jewel case or cardboard sleeve with the CD key printed on it, not the whole package, and not the CD itself)
- Your email address
- The Steam account you want the CD key assigned to

Send your package to:
