steam takes very long time to open

i've p4 3.6 ghz , 1 gb ram , nvidia geforce 6800 gt 256 mb graphic card with 48kbps lan internet connection . i've just installed half life 2 .when i double click hl2 desktop icon it takes about 5 to 7 mins. to open steam update and also doesn't get updated.but when i disable my lan connection and instead use telephone connection steam update immediately opens and starts updating . i don't want to use telephone connection and want to use lan connection to update . pls help.

What's this 48Kbps LAN? Doesn’t sound any better than using regular Dialup.

56k versus 48...? I'll go with the 56...
