Taylor now says yes to the DVD backup feature.

On a side note, DougV says there are no working keygens for Steam yet.

My understanding, Steam will make CD or DVD sized self-extracting archives that you can then use a 3rd party program to burn to disc. I assume it will include an installer for Steam so it'll be just like having retail CDs/DVDs. Very cool!

That indeed would be a very nice and useful feature!

don't they have better things to do?....
anyone but the computer illiterate can backup a bunch of files....

I don't see anything wrong with including a handy backup tool...

if u want it early, paste this into ur Internet explorer
"steam://backup/" without the quotes.

I think that's a bit harsh Vaporz.

If you don't have a DVD burner, you are a little stuck - especially with the Half Life 2 GCF's running at 1 GB in size each. "IF" the backup utility allows you to split the files across CDs then this will be great for a vast amount of people. I've just bought myself a DVD burner as I didn't fancy having to use third party utilities to split the GCF's in half to get them on CD.

looks like a pretty good little App. it does the splitting for you and makes a multi-file SEA...cool.

I backed up my HL1 engine games, when HL2 comes unlocked and that, I'll put that on a DVD.

One of the main reasons for the creation of Steam was for customer convenience. If you ask me this is a very convenient feature for alot of people.

I tried backing up my files earlier but i cant figure out what i'm doing wrong. I let it complete and clicked 'finish' at the end, but i have nothing in my Backups folder. I chose to backup to a single DVD archive.

Anyone else get this problem?

WinRAR splits big files into small ones to fit on CDs, so 1 gig file would be 500 , 500 or 700, 300 MB. Not sure which one.

But where exactly on Steam is the option to backup the files, I cant find it. Should I have it registered before I can backup the files?

Have what registered?
Right-click on a game name in the 'Play Games' menu ...

can anyone help ı figured the backup thing it is about 2 gbs but ı dont know how to burn it on a dvd?

can someone walk through the burning process? i am new to this whole steam thing and would like to backup my silver package purchase to dvd incase my pc crashes.

also, how hard is it to restore on a clean install? i re-install xp pretty frequently.

I tried to do a restore right now, after reinstalling my computer. IT DID'NT FARKING WORK!!!

After about 35-40 mins. of unpacking, it kindly said: "please insert disk 2"... what DISK 2 ?!?!?!?! I DID A COMPLETE BACKUP AND BURNED IT TO A DVD-DISC!!!

Now I'm stuck downloading EVERYTHING AGAIN... which means I won't be playing ANYTHING this evening...

Man this sucks worse than anything in a long time for me...

I also have a problem, the sun of a bitch starts to restore the files and throws me an error and closes, This sucks, I can't donwload any more I'm way over the limit for the first download of hl2... What about now?
