Is anyone else now getting a Securom error when trying to play the steam version of the game? I was playing fine up until a week ago, but now when I hit "Play" in the social club window, I get the following:

SecuLauncher: Failed to start application. [2000]

I tried reinstalling, rebooting my computer, validating the files, defragmenting, reinstalling the newest versions of the .net framework and C++ redistributable, and nothing fixes it. So can someone else see if they can start the game now so I can tell if its a problem on my end?

Wow that fuckin sucks dude, what about throwing a email to gabe or someone? I don't really have anything to offer since I don't own the game, but from the amount of complaints people have about it being a buggy piece of shit..I'm glad I don't.

I never really had any problems with it, even on my brother's laptop, so that just more disappointment now that I can't play. I'll wait to see if others have this problem too before I start emailing people. Although at the steampowered forums, someone just made a new thread with the same error message, so it could very well be steam causing it.

Yea I was about to say check out the steam forums, I'm sure they'll probably fix it soon if enough people complain. Anyways yea that sucks, man :\.

You can play it without Steam it what i do. Close steam and run launchGta4.exe instead the game will launch without steam. So if Steam is the problem you should be fine.

1) Do not avoid the swear filter
2) When you have a problem with a game emailing Gabe is a really stupid idea. It shouldn't be the first thing you do, or something you do at all. It's completely ludicrous.

Hang on a sec how does E-mailing Gabe help? GTA is a Rockstar game it's their responsibility for it to work. Securom and the bugs is the problem of Rockstar and no one else. Moaning to Gabe about a buggy game when all Steam does is sell you the game is like moaning to the owner of a shop that a game he sold has bugs in it. There is nothing he can do and all you would be doing is wasting yours and his time.

I think he was saying that because STEAM is a product of Valve, and STEAM may be causing the problem. Two threads have been made on the steampowered.com forums in the past two days by two other people having the exact same problem. So if it is a STEAM related problem, then Gabe may be able to do something.

Although trying to run it without steam didnt seem to help. Though that doesnt put steam out of blame, because I think it may be a problem with steam restoring a backup of the game. Before the beta, restoring a GTA IV backup wouldnt even work at all, now it seems to work, but doesnt really.

Same thing is happening to me. I'm on Windows 7 x64 and the game won't fricking start. Any attempts to install any of the crap that comes with the download that's meant to fix all problems on XP/Vista don't work or even finish installing on Windows 7.
Can't even get Windows Live to install, it says it needs XP SP2 or higher, even though I'm running it in ****ing XP SP2 compatibility mode. You'd think Microsoft would make their products work with each other.
Mother****ers.

That's weird, because on my copy of W7X64 I have Windows Live running fine!

Oh, I probably should have updated this thread with how I fixed it.

Go into your control panel > Programs and Feature and look for any instances of the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable. I had like 3 different versions, the 2005 one that came with gta4, and the newest 2008 one in both x86 and x64 formats. I had to uninstall all three, restart my computer, then install the vcredist_x86 found in: D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv\Installers

That should get rid of the Securom error.

Then I ran into the "needs xp sp2 or higher" error, and I had to set LaunchGTA4.exe to XP SP2 compatibility mode, and ONLY LaunchGTA4.exe. If I had the other .exe files in compatibility mode it wouldn't work.

Also, know that there are two gta patches out now that you should get, and an update to GFWL that you can manually install by downloading the file from here.

Hopefully one of those things will get you up and running. If not, well... enjoy your Beta OS and stop complaining about them not having support for a unreleased product. :P

I have no instances of the C++ redist (because they didn't install in the first place), and the vcredist_x86 doesn't install because it says I don't have some bullshit admin rights to install to somewhere, which I have.

EDIT: Yup, still getting a ****ing Shiturom error, and now you linked to that 1.2 GFWL install, social club is saying I need to update. I can't, because it gives me some bullshit about a 'fatal error' during the 2.0 install.

How the **** did you get round the "Fatal Error" then?
EDIT: And Krynn, if someone else has got it working, then I should be able to as well. Rockstar are just retarded for making such a broken game, and then breaking it further with patches.

If someone else got it working, then obviously its something on your end. SO SHAZAM, IN YO FACE.

I realise that, which is why I was asking how the hell he managed it. I've tried everything under the sun.

Doesn't matter now anyway, I'm back in uni on my craptop, so can't play it either way.
