steam update help

g'day i just purchased half life 2 5 disc set. its installed fine, i've registered its decrypted my files. and now every time steam tries to update when i click on my half life 2 icon. The problem is the update bar will get about halfway through then it will just quit and steam closes down. i've tried numerous times. I was thinking maybe its because theyre adding quite a few new things to steam lately and the servers cant handle everyone updating, and me being on dialup i get kicked off.

can anyone help?
