When I try to log onto Steam, it just says Updating Steam... and it never moves...i've left it for over 2 hours before and it doesnt update at all...i tried uninstalling and re-downloading it but it still doesnt work. HELP!

do you have a computer or a toaster with a jackhammer sticking out of it?

yuh

yes i have a d-link router and Norton systemworks with the firewall on it but i had this problem before i got the router

If you temporarily disalbe your router firewall and Norton firewall, does it let you connect then?

I have the same problem and no i dont have a firewall or router i connect directly to the internet... never had this problem have closed and tryied numerous times it just goes to like 40 % and just stays there.

ANy idea what to do ?

.

i've tried disabling my norton firewall before, and that was before i got the router and it still didnt work. i'm not sure how to disable my router

Hi,

I just started having the same problem. The Steam cursor in the taskbar displays 'Steam - Updating - 64% complete'. I have been playing the game for over a week, and have had no problems with it upto now. I use a router and a firewall, but these have not been changed, and I've never had trouble before.

Also, I'd just like to point out that you don't have to enter a title for every post you make, pinkOmurphys. :E

Hi,

I found a work around to my updating problem:

1. I used MSCONFIG to prevent STEAM from running once my machine booted.
2. I rebooted my machine and ran STEAM using my HL2 icon. STEAM loaded and updated, the update was just an ad.
3. I tested HL2 and made sure that it still worked.
4. After I quit HL2. I ran MSCONFIG and set so that STEAM would run on Startup.
5. I rebooted, and I have had no further problems.

Good. Mind if I use your reply to help people that have this problem?

I have this problem everytime STEAM wants to post a new add. To eliminate the problem, hopefully for good, I just removed STEAM from my Startup, using msconfig. STEAM only starts when I want to play HL2 and it handles the updates alot better.

Right-click the Steam icon, go to Settings then Interface and uncheck the box that says 'Run Steam when Windows starts'. You don't need msconfig to do that. :p

I use RegCleaner for all my registry modifications and startup add ins and removals. Much safer to make changes, since it backs up every single change.

Ace registry cleaner too.
