Beginning in July, Steam users can set up their own personal Steam pages and profiles, create and join groups, schedule games with friends, review who they've played with, see how well everyone played, chat with groups, chat via voice, and more. These new community services and features can be used with all Steam games, which include new releases and classic titles from leading publishers and independent developers. Tell us more Gabe...
Our community has given us great direction on the ways they want to see Steam evolve. Adding these new community features to make it easier to connect with other gamers is something we've wanted to see on Steam for a long time and this latest update is just the start. We've got a long list of items that we're working on to make it easier for gamers to connect and play games on Steam.
Steam has been continually updated since release, however this is the largest extension it's ever seen. This update will be free of charge, with the new community features accessible via the Steam desktop client and via the web.

Works with all Steam games, not just Valve titles? Extreme win!

Hmm... New breed of Emo gamers? Steamo?

Sounds like a great idea! Although all I'll have to do is copy my myspace.

So basically it's Xbox Live but for Steam and for free?

AWESOMENESS!

message to xbox live users

:p

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Anyway sounds joyious all that is needed now is hl2 ep2/tf2/portal/l4d to be release early.

Absolutely epic. Does XBlive have anything over this new system, or are Valve really offering the equivalent service?

The fact Steam is doing for free what XBL is charging for...

Instant win.

I don't think so. :) @ jondy

Yeah, it looks like Xbox Live on the PC for free, and not exclusively on Vista. Looks like I might not be renewing my Gold membership in November :p

I've been excited for this release for some time. I just really hope, jokes aside, that Valve doesn't turn Steam Community into some ugly slow-loading, wallpaper-plastered MySpace clone.

I am excited for the Group chat, though. That looks pretty cool.

We should have some sort of hl2.net group thing on this :D

I thought I would like to share my e-mail that I got from Mr. Newell himself last night! :cheese:

Subject: Steam Community service question.

Thanks for taking the time and reading this e-mail. Xfire should have some heavy competition against the Steam Community service now because it does essentially the same thing. My question is, will the Steam Community service support games that are not supported by Steam? Xfire has hundreds of games supported and it would be a shame if Steam could only support the games that are currently in it's catalogue. Again I thank you for your time reading this.‎

Yes.
Say goodbye to paying for XBL and that disconnecting xfire client! :E

Oh yeah I realized after I sent the e-mail that one of the ShadowLAN pics had Gabe's PowerPoint show in the back and it said that it supports non-Steam games. Haus member took down the pics because he's fixing them he said.

guess I should get some more steam friends to make this worthwhile

My steam friends list is unfortunately full of people I've never heard of, because I gave out my steam username when Friends was being beta tested... Time to start deleting I think ;)

Awesomeness.
And yes we need a HL2.net section for it, this is going to be soo beneficial to the community.

I hope this kicks Games for Windows out of the haus.

... boycott vista.

I'm trying to think of someone or some group to abuse or belittle but i just can't.

Oh **** it.

YOU SUCK GEORGE LUCAS

We'll have to poke Dan Turk to get a Steam icon next to MSN etc on profiles...

This will be awesome!

God I hope they do it well, other wise it could be a complete disaster.

This is going to be awesome.

Great, im going to try and be at a lan when this gets released.

Haha support for windows 98 and ME ends on my birthday \o/
