Imagine a creature as big as a sperm whale, with the instincts of a predator. That's what scientists believe they've found, and they're calling it "Leviathan."

BBC News has the story:

Researchers have discovered the fossilised remains of an ancient whale with huge, fearsome teeth. Writing in the journal Nature, the scientists have dubbed the 12 million-year-old creature "Leviathan".

It is thought to have been more than 17m long, and might have engaged in fierce battles with other giant sea creatures from the time.

Living alongside the largest sharks ever known, the raptorial—meaning actively hunting—whale measured about 60 feet (18 meters) in length, about as big as a modern male sperm whale.

But whereas modern sperm whales feed primarily on squid, Leviathan's large teeth—some of which measured more than a foot (36 centimeters) long—suggest the whale hunted more challenging prey, including perhaps its close whale relatives.

"It was probably a very powerful and frightening animal, so it fits well with the description Melville made of Moby-Dick," said lead study author Olivier Lambert, a paleontologist at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.

Megalodon is still a little over 3 meters larger, but that's awesome. Given that this this is thought to be over 17 meters long though..
