Well Microsofts competitor to the Ipod is named "Zune".

I like the name to be honest. It seems casual. To be honest if Microsoft fights Apple in this market like they are fighting with the X-Box they should do damn good.

Although... the name Zune seems casual to me....to the french....
"A SHORT EMAIL from a French-Canadian friend of ours, Antoine, has pointed out that the Zune brand isn't as globally acceptable as Microsoft might like to think.

Unfortunately in French-Canadian slang, Zune is used to describe parts of the male anatomy. You know, your pecker, big-joe, schlong, etc, etc.

We're not sure this is a wise move on Microsoft's part (hehe), albeit its probably better than naming your device after what comes out of it. Take note Nintendo. µ"

Somehow I don't think this will be nearly as successful as the xbox has been. I can't see a company (even one as flush as MS) wanting to unload even more money just to force its way into a market already easily dominated by a gargantuan installed base--they have done that already with the xbox division and have a $7 billion hole to show for it so far. Still, stranger things have happened so we will see.

I'd dare say the console market is a higher risk than the portable music player market, so I'd be suprised if they hesitated to enter. Actually, I'm glad they're entering, my iPod is good and all, but it's overpriced, Apple has horrible support and so on; and MS has -always- made great hardware.

I don't mind the name, it's kind of cool, kind of lame, but everyone will get over it like they got over Wii and the other weird product names.

Also, I don't trust The Enquirer anymore, but they might be not lying this time.

Actually, I am a French-Canadian (and my name is also Antoine :O) and I have never heard the word "Zune" used as a representation of the male organ.

Hmm, well it looks like the Zune might not be much different or, in fact, worse, in this respect:

Microsoft Zune 30GB will cost as much as $399, according to Digital Music News web-site. For the same amount of money Apple sells iPod 60GB, whereas iPod 30GB costs $299. Microsoft, however, believes that customers will be eager to pay more for its Zune player just because it has some kind of broader feature-set, including ad-hoc music sharing between a group of people in the range of the device as well as digital radio, thanks for wireless connectivity.
