I need help with stopping a bad habit of mine. I have the tendency to pop my thumbs. No other fingers, just my thumbs. I can pop them about 5000 times a day, no kidding. I can pretty much pop it continuously without stop, but generally only do it for a length of a few minutes.

Lately though, i've been getting some pretty serious pains in my right hand doing this when I have popped my thumb alot. Shooting from my thumb down my forearm to the inside of my elbow joint. I figure this is the time to seriously stop popping my thumbs.

However... I can't seem to do it! there is an overwhelming physical and mental urge to just do it. Sometimes if I haven't done it for a while, just moving the thumb causes it to pop, and that triggers an urge to just do it continously.

Pretty frusterating. Can anybody offer suggestions? And maybe brainstorm why I would be being caused pain? They say popping joints isn't harmful... but this is starting to hurt.

As an side... to keep this topic fresh and interesting, go ahead and list a bad habit or two of your own that you need to stop... whether it be picking your nose and eating it, or what have you... <grins>

Ask your friends to hit you whenever you pop your thumb. I have a friend who yells at me/hits me when I crack my fingers, it works.. she is a scary lady :p

Other than that, I have no bad habits! I'm practically perfect in every way! *belches, scratches and drinks out of milk carton* Yup.

I don't have enough active friends around this area.

Hmmm. Family members? :p

Maybe the pain from popping your thumb will get you stop quickly

Yeah, you'd think huh? It's gotten to be such an overwhelming urge that as soon as a bit of the pain subsides, I do it again... As far as the family members... I only ever do it when i'm alone.

I'm going to have to brace my thumb so it can't bend at all... Heh. But if I do that, the moment I get it all off i'm gonna pop my damn thumbs.

<rips his thumbs off>

There, problem solved!

Put a rubber band around your wrist, and every time you do said habit, snap the rubber band on the inside of your wrist. Pavlovian response an' all that.

I have a stupid habit of my own. I constantly touch and pull on the hairs at the back of my head. Once I did it repeatedly until that part of my head hurt like hell, but I still couldn't stop! My point is your not the only one.

it sounds like you stim a lot (skip over the part that says Asperger's Syndrome or Autism (I'm not saying that. You definately do NOT have either))

have you ever been diagnosed with OCD? ..again (I hate their labels) omit the "disorder" part ..OCD can be very mild (like stimming) or it can be life disrupting

Maybe it's that you're not popping it enough?

I lol'ed badly at your new avatar

On another note, I also had this problem with chewing on my knuckles (the skin of it). It was so damn satisfying, but it caused my knuckles to swell up to incredible sizes and it looked damn ugly. If I continued chewing after that it started to hurt but I didn't care I just kept going :p

Then I got my gf and she really hated it so I just stopped doing it (which was very hard) but she helped me a lot with it by paying attention to me :p

Self discipline to stop bad habbits!

I can't think of any bad habbits i have, other than eating like a horse wherever i am.

You could call the mafia, and ask them to put your thumbs in clamps.

Either that or de-thumb yourself.

Razi are you OCC?

OCC? You mean OCD?

I don't know how I could be diagnosed with OCD. I'm sure I have it mildly... I've even started another thread on it. there's quite a few things i do that I haven't even detailed on, and they drive me nuts. I don't know how i'd go about getting diagnosed with it though, or if I even want to/can afford to.

Ahhh!!! Now my knuckles are aching and my lips are bleeding!

DAMN YOU DAN TURK RAZIAAR!

I bite my finger-nails, but instead of biting them when there long, I bit them even when they are short, right now they are ridulously short, the finger skin goes about 1/2 of a cm past my nails, it doesn't hurt anytime, but I'd like to stop, I just can't!! I also bite the skin off on the tips of my fingers, I don't even know what started that, but my skin on the end of my fingers is so far down, I physicly can't bite of any more skin, it is that far down, when it grows back, I bite it right off... I need to stop this, but it's a habit...

I bight my nails too
And the skin around them
But its a lot easier to than cutting them
So i'm happy with it

When I get buccal ulcers, I usually bite them really hard with my teeth and I really enjoy the pain.

Is cracking my knuckles a bad habit? Most ppl say u release oxygen and it goes up to ur head thru ur bloodstream and u wont have enough dissolved oxygen in ur blood there...

Wow. So rhetorical.

Look Azner, whoever told you that was pulling it out of their ass. I've heard many say that cracking joints causes calcium to build up in said joints (eventually leading to arthritis), but every doctor I've asked has said that this is not the case. Anyway, try to use a little common sense :|

Yes that's why what i meant lol.

I vaguely remember that thread now. This can be serious. I honestly encourage you to consult your regular physician (if you have one) or just go see a doctor.

I have a few medical issues that I haven't seen a doctor about, mainly because i'm worried I cannot afford them. They've screwed me in the past, and i'm hesitant to go to them again even though I know I need to.

Wait wait, how exactly does the fact that your brother is retarded and cracks his spine every night support the assumption that cracking joints gives you arthritis?

I don't think the second part of that sentence was meant as factual support for the first, but rather as a related anecdote.

Damn im cracking my knuckles too, and my fingers, AND my wrist, all on the same hand. Also my neck. I need help.
