strange graphical error in HL2

I recently built a new pc, the specs are.

Core 2 Extreme QX6700
BFG 8800 GTX
X-FI Fatality
Intel D975XBX2 Bad Axe 2 Motherboard
4 gig of ram
150gb raptor
Vista 64bit Ultimate.

I have only tried half life 2 and counterstrike source on the machine. and both will load up and then the main menu turns into this: http://www.imagehosting.com/show.php/757465_hl2****edup.jpg.html

I have the up to date drivers and have searched for a soulution. from what i understand its not a common problem.

Any help would be appreciated
