Strange problem with steam

Hello everyone
I looked at the older titles bou couldn't find anything like my problem. Checked google too (In fact i found this site there).

When i play steam games like tf2 or portal, my game acts like i hit alt+tab and returns to windows. when i click it back i can continue playing but it sometimes leads to a connection problem in tf2 games.

Then i noticed the same thing happened when i was playin settlers 2 (which obiviously has no relation with steam) while steam was running in the background.

So anyone had a problem like this before? Or does anyone konw how to fix it. It'll be really helpful for me.

Sounds like there is another program that is stealing focus. Its tricky to diagnose simply becuase of the near limitless number of programs you might be running.

Best suggestion I can think of is to go through and close each program. After you close each one, play untill issue happens, then close the next program and try again. Once it stops happening, you know that whatever you last closed is the culprit.

Of course it might not be another program stealing focus, its just a possible cause, so this might not fix issue.

is anybody chatting you up on AIM or MSN or any other chat client? i know if i have a game fullscreen and someone msgs me it will sometimes boot me out of the game and minimize it when the chat window pops up and opens.

nope. i only use msn messenger and i always turn it off before i run steam. i also turn off google desktop, avg free, spybot tea timer and ati catalyst control center.
