Strange thing about the water refraction

Because they put something in it, to make you forget.
 
darn smart answers. Who knows why they didn't put it in. Time issues, hardware limitations (7800GTX might be able to handle it...ATI 9600 might not).
 
I'm no expert on shaders, but I would imagine it would be very hard to do refraction in three dimensions. In HL2, just the flat two-dimensional surface refracts. I guess it would be possible to apply a shader to the entire screen when you're underwater, it would be sort of like the mutagen effect in Sin: Episodes.
