String theory

Can anyone explain to me in simple terms(really simple, I am dumb ) what the string theory is? I get the basic idea of a string...but why does that prove that there are8 dimension or whatever? Also is the string a physical object? or just a mathematical way to describe it is by calling it a string. Also, if it is a physical object(according to some guy...in a brief history of time) it has to be able to hold 1000000000000000000000000000000000000(1 with 36 zeros) tons? How is that possible?

Yah, the unified phyiscs theory or somthing like that. Large and small particles...can't remember the names right now quantum and somthing else I think. Nice site though, I favorited it, thanks.
