Why is it that this game runs really stupid on my computer when I set textures to high? WHY! Many people will tell me that its becuase I need 2gb of RAM, well, no. I have 2 freinds that can play this game maxed out with NO stutter or lag with a x850xt PE and 1gb of RAM. I made two different perfomance graphs to show you how bad it runs:

Both are run with the same basic settings:
Everything high (except textures)
1280x1024
4xAA with transparency multisampling
16xAF
Gamma Correct AA

Medium Textures:

High Textures:

Why is the differnece that bad? And do I really need 2gb of RAM??? Makes me want to kick myself for getting such a "high end" computer if you can even call it that.:flame:

Maybe it's not just the textures. Your settings are pretty high. I don't know how powerful a 7800 is though.

Fromthe first graph to the second, the only setting that changed was textures Medium on the first, high on the second. So it HAS to be the stupid textures on this game.

It's the AA and AF. Try turning those waaay down and doing it again. On my X800 XT, the game plays great with everything on high (except for lighting, which is on medium) but AA off. With 2x AA, though, the game is unplayable.

Don't you see, you have an x800 XT, I have a 7800GTX, I should be able to pull that off at 1600x1200 but my monitor doesn't go that high. ARG!

EDIT: I got curious and took off AA and turned down AF to 2x and left everything else maxed out....the results?

As you can see it ran a little bit better if not worse than having 4xAA and 16xAF, but then fixed itself after the first fly through of the map.

ok, ok. you win. maybe try a reinstall? drivers? cooling? I don't know, there a million possible explanations.

And you're running a 7800 without a monitor that can do 1600x1200? Shame on you!

an x850xt wont use the transparency multisampling you are using- this takes a huge fps hit- turn it down, or off, and you'll barely notice the difference visually, while you fps should increase and stabilise.

I already tried not using AA, check three posts up to see the results of that. And yeah, buying this monitor was a mistake on my part, I will be selling it soon though.

Yeah, the textures are especially not well suited to indoor areas, a couple of special forces maps are completely unplayable for me (the carrier, the palace) because everything above and below you is being loaded to your computer. You can hear crystal clear guys above and below you on other floors, its teh sucs.

I have a computer that cannot compare side-by-side, but it appears to outperform in Battlefield 2. I can play with exactly all the settings you listed with an average FPS of about ~40. Here are my system specifications. Seeing as how I have 2GB of memory, I guess that proves that more memory = better.

You want high quality go for more ram. Sheesh god knows what your running in the background.

To top things off this is BF2 one of the bulkiest game engines around except for UE3 (not even finished).

UE3 is completed... though nothing is ever "completed". Simply do to the reason Unreal Tournament 2007, Gears of War, and so on are still being developed doesn't mean UE3 isn't finished. Hell, I guarantee it isn't undergoing development, besides the refinement to better fit the games that are being produced on the engine. I also know that the engine is finalized due to the fact Tripwire Entertainment (creators of Red Orchestra) has their hands on the engine, and have said it themselves.

Oh what the hell, why am I making a big deal out of this? This isn’t even meant for the discussion of UE3.

/me goes elsewhere to rant and rave frivolously.

I guess another gig of RAM will be the only solution to this then. Bah, why did I spend so much for this RAM....

And about the background apps, the only thing I usually have running is xfire. I only have about 21 processes and all but 3 are system ones.
